Vice Admiral Sanjay Bhalla Takes Helm as Chief of Personnel of Indian Navy

Vice Admiral Sanjay Bhalla, AVSM, NM, a seasoned naval officer with over 35 years of distinguished service, has assumed the pivotal role of Chief of Personnel of the Indian Navy on 10 May 2024. His extensive career has been marked by a series of challenging and fulfilling appointments, both at sea and ashore.

A Journey Through Specialty and Command

Commissioned into the Indian Navy on 01 January 1989, Vice Admiral Bhalla specialised in Communication and Electronic Warfare. He served aboard several frontline warships, honing his skills and expertise. Subsequently, he had the privilege of holding commanding roles at sea, including the coveted appointment of Flag Officer Commanding Eastern Fleet (FOCEF).

During his tenure as FOCEF, Vice Admiral Bhalla served as the Officer in Tactical Command for the prestigious President’s Fleet Review (PFR – 22) and the Sea Phase of the Indian Navy’s flagship multinational exercise MILAN – 22, which witnessed an unprecedented participation from friendly foreign countries.

Ashore and Overseas Appointments

Ashore, Vice Admiral Bhalla held crucial staff appointments at the Naval Headquarters, including Assistant Chief of Personnel (Human Resource Development). He also headed officers’ training at the Naval Academy and served in a diplomatic assignment overseas.

Before assuming his current role as the Chief of Personnel, he served as the Chief of Staff of the Western Naval Command, overseeing critical operations such as Op Sankalp and events like the Navy Day Op Demo 2023 at Sindhudurg.

Educational Accomplishments and Accolades

Vice Admiral Bhalla is an alumnus of prestigious institutions, including the Royal College of Defence Studies in London, the Naval War College, and the Defence Services Staff College in Wellington. His educational accomplishments include an M.Phil (Defence & Strategic Studies), a Master’s in International Security and Strategic Studies from King’s College, London, an M.Sc (Defence & Strategic Studies) from the University of Madras, and an M.Sc (Telecom) from CUSAT.

In recognition of his distinguished service, Vice Admiral Bhalla has been awarded the Ati Vishisht Seva Medal, the Nao Sena Medal, and Commendations by the Chief of the Naval Staff and the Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief.
