Western Railway Resumes Heritage Train on This 155-Year-Old Line

The Western Railway has resumed operations of its 9.5 km metre-gauge heritage train on the iconic Patalpani–Kalakund line in Madhya Pradesh. Services had been briefly suspended earlier due to a decline in tourist footfall. With its rich history and breathtaking scenic views, the train remains a major attraction for heritage tourism enthusiasts.

About the Patalpani–Kalakund Line

Located on the Dr. Ambedkar Nagar (Mhow)–Khandwa section, the Patalpani–Kalakund line runs through the picturesque hilly terrain of Madhya Pradesh, offering passengers panoramic views of valleys, forests, and waterfalls. The journey is considered a unique experience, blending history, culture, and natural beauty.

Historical Background

The roots of the Patalpani–Kalakund line go back to the 19th century. It was first envisioned by Maharaja Tukoji Rao Holkar II (1844–1886), the ruler of the Holkar dynasty of Indore. His proposal for a railway line from Indore to Khandwa, including the Patalpani–Kalakund section, was realized in 1878.

Initially named the Holkar State Railways, the line was later merged with the Rajputana-Malwa Railway in 1881-82, making it an integral part of India’s early railway expansion.

Tourism and Heritage Significance

The resumption of the heritage train is expected to boost tourism in the region, as the Patalpani–Kalakund line holds immense cultural and historic value. The route is not only a reminder of India’s railway legacy but also a major attraction for visitors seeking an immersive travel experience through Madhya Pradesh’s natural landscapes.
