The global arms trade has changed a lot in recent years. Many countries are buying more weapons to improve their security. According to a 2026 report by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI), international arms transfer increased by about 9.2% between 2016-20 and 2021-25. This rise shows that countries are becoming more focused on defense, especially in times of conflict and tension.
The Largest Arms Importer in the World
At present, Ukraine is the biggest arms importer in the world. Between 2021 and 2025, it received about 9.5% of all global arms imports.
This sharp increase is mainly because of the ongoing war with Russia. Ukraine is receiving large amounts of military equipment and support from countries like the United States, Germany, and Poland. These supplies are helping the country defend itself and strengthen its military.
Top-5 Biggest Arms Importing Countries
Apart from Ukraine, several other countries are also buying a large number of weapons to improve their defense systems.
Here are the names of top-5 largest arms importers in the world:
India
India is the second-largest arms importer with around 8.2% share. It buys weapons mainly from Russia, France, and Israel. India focuses on modernising its military and maintaining regional security.
Saudi Arabia
Saudi Arabia holds the third position with 6.8% share. Most of its arms comes from the United States. The country invests heavily in defense due to tensions in the Middle East.
Qatar
Qatar ranks fourth with 6.4% share. It is rapidly expanding its air and naval forces and imports weapons mainly from the US, Italy, and the UK.
Pakistan
Pakistan is in fifth place with 4.2% share. It depends mostly on China for military supplies and continues to strengthen its defense due to regional challenges.
Major Trends in Global Arms Trade
Europe has seen the fastest growth in arms imports. Countries in this region have increased their purchases by more than 200%. This is mainly due to rising security concerns and the impact of the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
Decline in Asia and Middle East Imports
Interestingly, arms imports in Asia and the Middle East have slightly decreased.
- In the Middle East, imports dropped by about 13%.
- In Asia and Oceania, imports fell by 20%.
One major reason is that countries like China are now producing more of their own military equipment.
Largest Arms Exporting Countries
- United States: It is the world’s largest arms exporter, with about 42% share of global exports. It supplies weapons to many countries, especially in Europe.
- France: It is the second-largest exporter with around 9.8% share. India is one of its biggest customers.
- Russia: It is now in third place. Its exports have dropped significantly, mainly because it is using more weapons for its own military and has fewer buyers.
