Maldives President – Educational Career
Muizzu’s educational journey commenced at Majeediyya School, the oldest school in the Maldives. He pursued his passion for structural engineering, earning his bachelor’s and master’s degrees at the University of London, followed by a Ph.D. in civil engineering from the University of Leeds. His academic accolades also include a Project Management Professional (PMP) certification from America’s Project Management Institute (PMI). In 1998, Muizzu commenced his government service as a Construction & Public Works Planning Technician Trainee at the Ministry of Construction and Public Works.
Political Career of President of Maldives
Minister of Housing:
In 2012, Muizzu assumed the role of Minister of Housing and Environment during President Waheed Hassan’s administration. He continued under President Abdulla Yameen’s government after the 2013 Presidential Election. Notably, Muizzu oversaw major infrastructure projects, including the historic Sinamalé Bridge, the first inter-island bridge in Maldivian history.
Progressive Party of Maldives:
Post the 2018 presidential election, Muizzu joined the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) and was appointed as the vice-president and head of the Elections Department of the opposition.
Mayor of Malé:
In 2021, Muizzu achieved a significant milestone by being elected as the Mayor of Malé, defeating the candidate from the ruling Maldivian Democratic Party. This victory marked him as the first directly elected Mayor of Malé, serving a 5-year term.

Muizzu is married to Sajidha Mohamed, and together they have three children. His family background includes a half-sister, Saudha, who is a PNC candidate for the Nilandhoo constituency. Muizzu’s father, Sheikh Hussain Abdul Rahman, was a judge and scholar of religion, receiving the National Award of Honour in 2013 for his contributions to religious awareness and education.
