1. PM Modi inaugurated CBI’s diamond jubilee celebrations
The Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi inaugurated the Diamond Jubilee Celebrations of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) at Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi. The Central Bureau of Investigation was established by a resolution of the Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India dated 1st April 1963. The Prime Minister also inaugurated the newly constructed office complexes of CBI at Shillong, Pune and Nagpur. He released a Postage Stamp and Commemorative Coin marking the Diamond Jubilee Celebration year of CBI and also launched the Twitter handle of CBI. He also released the updated Administration Manual of CBI, an Almanac on Bank Frauds – case studies and learning, In pursuit of justice – Supreme Court Judgements in CBI Cases and a handbook on International Police cooperation for the exchange of foreign located intelligence & evidence.

2. Union Minister Sonowal launches ‘SAGAR-SETU’ mobile app of National Logistics Portal Marine

3. Rajya Sabha passes Competition Amendment Bill, 2023
The Rajya Sabha approved the Competition Amendment Bill, 2023, aimed at modernizing the two-decade-old anti-trust law to align with changes in the economy. The Competition Amendment Bill, 2023 aims to modify the Competition Act, 2002, which authorizes the Competition Commission of India (CCI) to prevent practices that adversely impact competition and consumer interests.
4. India develops country-level model for estimating TB cases
India has developed a country-level mathematical model that estimates the prevalence of tuberculosis (TB) cases in the country. The model allows for TB incidence and mortality estimate data to be available by March each year, months before the World Health Organization (WHO) releases its annual estimates in October. The model, which draws from data such as an individual’s infection and disease status, healthcare utilization, and treatment outcomes, was presented at the 36th Stop TB Partnership Board meeting in Varanasi. The Indian model estimated the TB incidence rate in India to be 196 in 2022, lower than the WHO’s estimate of 210 and suggested 3.20 lakh TB mortality absolute numbers in 2022, lower than WHO’s estimated 4.94 lakhs.
5. China’s Yuan Replaces Dollar as Most Traded Currency in Russia
In recent years, there has been a shift in the global currency landscape, with China’s yuan steadily gaining ground against the US dollar. This trend is reflected in Russia, where the yuan has now overtaken the dollar as the most traded currency. According to data from the Moscow Exchange, the yuan accounted for 23.6% of Russia’s foreign exchange turnover in the first quarter of 2023, while the dollar’s share was 22.5%. This marks the first time the yuan has surpassed the dollar in Russia’s currency market.
6. Israel launches new Ofek-13 spy satellite into orbit
On April 5th, 2023, Israel successfully launched a new spy satellite, named Ofek-13, into orbit. The satellite, Ofek-13, launched from the Palmachim Airbase in central Israel, is intended to provide advanced intelligence capabilities to the Israeli military and intelligence agencies. 11. A new book titled “Gandhi: Siyasat aur Sampradaiykta” written by Piyush Babele
A new book in Hindi titled Gandhi: Siyasat aur Sampradaiykta (‘ Gandhi: Politics and Communalism’) written by journalist-turned-author Piyush Babele, who currently heads the Madhya Pradesh Congress’ media department. He cites extracts from Dr. Ambedkar’s book Pakistan or the Partition of India and other sources, and claims to “contextualise the developments leading up to India’s Partition in 1947 to bust the illusion spread by the Hindu right wing that Mahatma Gandhi was responsible for the Partition”.
12. PM SVANidhi Scheme: Loans to Minority Street Vendors Remain Low
The Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs informed the Rajya Sabha that under the PM SVANidhi scheme, 42.7 lakh loans worth ₹5,152.37 crore have been disbursed to street vendors. Shockingly, only 9.3% of these loans were granted to hawkers from minority communities, totaling 3.98 lakh loans. To assist street vendors in overcoming the economic difficulties caused by the pandemic, the government launched the PM SVANidhi micro-credit scheme in 2020. This initiative provides collateral-free loans of ₹10,000, with 7% interest subsidy, and subsequent loans of ₹20,000 and ₹50,000.
13. G20 EMPOWER 2nd Meeting: Accelerating Women’s Economic Empowerment

15. Commonwealth champion weightlifter Sanjita Chanu faces 4-year ban by NADA
Sanjita Chanu, a weightlifter from India who has won the Commonwealth Games twice, has been banned for four years by the National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA) of India after she tested positive for banned drugs. The testing took place during the National Games held in Gujarat in September-October 2022, and the results showed the presence of drostanolone, an anabolic-androgenic steroid prohibited by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA).

16. National Maritime Day 2023 observed on 05th April

18. Banarasi Paan, three other Varanasi-based goods receive GI tag
On April 3, 2022, the Benarasi Paan, which was featured in Amitabh Bachchan’s famous song “Khaike Paan Benaras Wala,” was granted the Geographical Indication (GI) tag. This means that these products have unique qualities specific to their respective regions. The Benarasi Paan, known for its distinct taste and unique blend of ingredients, has been awarded the GI tag along with three other Varanasi-based products: Banarasi Langda Mango, Ramnagar Bhanta (Brinjal), and Adamchini Rice. The expert Rajinikant, who is a Padma Awardee in GI, has confirmed the designation of these products.
