8.7 Crore Indian Youth Not in Education, Employment or Training: NITI Aayog

As per a recent report released by NITI Aayog, close to 8.7 crore Indians between 15 and 29 years of age are neither in education nor in employment or training, which is one of the most significant challenges for India’s labor market. This report titled “Reimagining Skilling for Viksit Bharat@2047” lays emphasis on the importance of making skill training cost-effective and flexible so that the youth can earn while they learn.

What does NEET Stand for?

As per NITI Aayog, NEET youth refers to those aged 15-29 years who are not engaged in any education, employment or training, including unemployed youth.

There are an estimated 8.7 crore NEET youth according to the survey done in the 78th round of National Sample Survey carried out in 2021. The report highlights this particular category as one of the most significant segments that need targeted intervention to increase their workforce participation.

Why do NEET Youth Require Affordable Skilling?

According to NITI Aayog, financial barriers often prevent youth from undergoing further paid training. Financially weaker students might already be facing a heavy burden of expenditure on higher education and private coaching.

Upon completion of their studies, young people start working in available jobs only to earn their bread, regardless of whether the job is not aligned with their qualification or pays very little. Some youth even find it difficult to enter the workforce and ultimately end up becoming a part of the NEET group.

Financial assistance along with subsidised training programs is recommended by the report in case of severe financial barriers.

Just 8.25% of Graduates in Relevant Employment

One of the other important issues highlighted by the report was that there is a big disconnect between education and employment. According to the report, only 8.25% of graduates have jobs relevant to their qualifications, as quoted by the NITI Aayog.

The lack of practical experience and inadequate industry-related skills training remains a barrier for employability even for the educated youth. It is imperative to bring the education and skills development process closer to the needs of the labour market.
