The state government of the Uttar Pradesh launched the ‘Project Ganga’’, it is the transformative initiative which aimed at to expanding the high-speed internet connectivity in the rural areas of state. It was launched by the Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath in Lucknow and this project seeks to bridge the digital divide by providing last-mile connectivity to villages along with creating the employment opportunities and promoting entrepreneurship.
What is Project Ganga?
Project Ganga is the rural digital connectivity initiative which launched by the Uttar Pradesh government to provide the reliable high-speed internet access in underserved areas.
The project aims to establish a comprehensive network of Digital Service Providers (DSPs) across the state.
These DSPs will act as the local digital entrepreneur, deliver the internet services and digital solutions to rural households.
Key Objectives of Project Ganga
The Uttar Pradesh government has set the ambitious targets under Project Ganga to accelerate the digital transformation in rural areas.
Major Targets of the Project
- High-speed internet connectivity for the approximately 20 lakh families
- Creation of around 8,000 to 10,000 Digital Service Providers (DSPs)
- Generation of over one lakh direct and indirect employment opportunities
- Expansion of digital education and telemedicine services
- Promotion of the e-governance and digital service delivery
- Encouragement of technology-based entrepreneurship
First Phase to Cover 21 Districts
Project Ganga is being implemented in the different phases to ensure effective execution and maximum outreach.
In the first phase, this initiative will be launched across 21 districts of Uttar Pradesh.
The government plans to gradually expand the network to cover the more regions and ensuring that rural communities across the state gain access to quality internet services and digital opportunities.
This phased approach will help to monitor progress and improve the implementation strategies as the project expands.
Role of Hinduja Group in Project Ganga
The Hinduja Group is playing the crucial role to supporting the implementation of the project.
The broadband arm of Hinduja OneOTT Intertainment Limited has been designated as the project’s Knowledge Partner and Implementation Enabler.
According to the company, Uttar Pradesh is the first state in India to adopt the such an innovative digital connectivity model.
The Hinduja Group has stated that it is supporting the initiative on a “No Profit, No Loss” basis and highlighting the its commitment to social development and digital inclusion.
Boost for Digital Entrepreneurship
A major focus of Project Ganga is the creation of a new generation of digital entrepreneurs.
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath announced that the state aims to prepare around 8,000 digital entrepreneurs who will serve as Digital Service Providers.
These entrepreneurs will play a key role in delivering internet connectivity and digital services at the grassroots level while creating sustainable livelihood opportunities.
The initiative is expected to connect young people with the rapidly growing digital economy and encourage self-employment.
Support Through CM Yuva Scheme
The Uttar Pradesh government is also integrating Project Ganga with the existing youth empowerment programs.
Under the CM Yuva Scheme, the eligible youth can avail interest-free loans of up to ₹5 lakh to establish their own enterprises.
Young entrepreneurs also selected under Project Ganga will also be able to access this financial assistance to set up the Digital Service Provider businesses.
This support mechanism is expected to accelerate the entrepreneurship and create new income opportunities in rural areas.
Key Role of Women in the Project
Women empowerment is the important component of the Project Ganga.
According to the Hinduja Group, around 50 percent of the beneficiaries under the initiative will be women.
The project aims to encourage the greater participation of women in digital entrepreneurship and help them to gain economic independence and become active contributors to the state’s digital economy.
This focus on to the gender inclusion aligns with the broader objective of ensuring equitable access to digital opportunities.
