Stanzin Tsangyang created history as she became the first woman officer from Kargil district to be commissioned into the Indian Army. Furthermore, she is also the first officer from Zanskar district of Ladakh to join the Indian Army. This is a historical moment for the entire family and community of Stanzin Tsangyang who wore the olive-green uniform on the day of her passing-out parade in the Officers Training Academy in Chennai on 5th September 2026. Her journey from Zanskar valley to the Indian Army is attributed to her education, determination and membership in the National Cadet Corps.
Who Is Stanzin Tsangyang?
Tsangyang was born in Zanskar valley of Ladakh. The mountainous terrain and freezing weather in which she lived instilled in her qualities like endurance and perseverance since she was young, according to the Army Training Command.
Since she is the youngest in the family, Tsangyang got much encouragement from her parents Tundup Tsering and Rigzin Ladol who attended her passing-out parade in Chennai from Ladakh.
Stanzin Tsangyang left her home in pursuit of education at a very young age. She stayed almost 14 years in a hostel while studying at Lamdon Model School in Leh.
Zanskar to Tezpur University
Based on her academic performance, she secured herself a scholarship to pursue further education. She eventually went on to study Mechanical Engineering in Tezpur University in Assam far from her hometown which is Ladakh.
Her connection with the National Cadet Corps during college opened a new path for her towards being an Army Officer.
Being from a civilian family and community where nobody had ever served in the military before, this was an unusual decision for her.
Historic Moment For OTA Chennai
Tsangyang was commissioned in Officers Training Academy Chennai on September 5, 2026.
The firsts Tsangyang created with her commissioning are her becoming the first-ever woman officer of Kargil District and the first officer of Zanskar District in Ladakh to be inducted into the Indian Army.
According to the Army Training Command, Tsangyang’s story is that of hardship, sacrifice, and uncertainty driven by her parents’ support and mountain upbringing.
