Indian Army Inducts First Indigenous Chip-Based 4G Base Station

Indian army has inducted the first-ever indigenous chip-based 4G mobile base station, which it procured from Bangalore-based firm Signaltron through the government e-marketplace portal. Signaltron founder Himamshu Khasnis told PTI that the chip used in the Sahyadri LTE base stations has been developed by Signalchip.

About this first singlechip

Earlier in 2010, Khasnis and his team founded a fabless semiconductor company Signalchip to make chips for 4G and 5G networks. “Signaltron has built the entire system indigenously using India’s first chips for 4G and 5G networks developed by Signalchip. This is the first time an Indian system running on an Indian chip for complex communication technology has been inducted into the army.

Benefits of this singlechip

Using indigenous chips gives a high degree of control on the security of the system in its operation,” Khasnis said. He said the Indian Army had posted a bid on GeM (Government e-Marketplace) for the supply of 4G LTE NIB (Network In a Box) solution last year. “Signaltron proposed the Sahyadri NIB solution and came out successful in stringent technical trials. Subsequently, Signaltron also won the competitive bid to supply the equipment.

High quality secure wireless

Weighing just 7 kgs, Sahyadri Network In a Box (NIB) systems provide high-quality secure wireless communication for audio, video and data applications,” Khasnis said. He said the Sahyadri NIB is capable of working in both standalone and cellular modes and capable of seamless inter-operation with legacy analogue and IP telephony systems.

Made in India

The majority of the base stations deployed in India are not made in India. Even the few that are made in India do not have indigenous chips inside, which is the most strategic and important component of modern electronic devices and equipment. Signaltron has supplied 20 units to the army and the deployment of the base stations depends on their strategic requirement, Khasnis said.

Flexibility to change the location

“We have supplied 20 units to the army. The Army takes its own call on when and where to deploy base station. Since they are light and mobile units, it gives them the flexibility to change the location as per their requirement, he added.

What is the Dimension of the Hockey Field?

Field hockey is a sport with precise regulations for the dimensions of the field and goalposts. Understanding these dimensions is crucial for both players and organizers to ensure the game is played fairly and within the guidelines set by the International Hockey Federation. This article covers the essential size dimensions of a field hockey.

Overview of Field Hockey

Field hockey is a team sport belonging to the hockey family. Each team consists of 11 players, including one goalkeeper. The main objective is to carry the round plastic ball from your field to the opponent’s goal using hockey sticks. These sticks can be made of wood, carbon fiber, fiberglass, or a combination of carbon fiber and fiberglass in varying quantities.

Key Dimensions of a Hockey Pitch

Size of the Hockey Pitch

A traditional hockey pitch measures 100 yards (91.4 meters) in length and 60 yards (55 meters) in width. This standard size ensures consistency in gameplay across different fields.

The Goal

The goal in field hockey stands 7 feet tall (2.14 meters) and 12 feet wide (3.66 meters). This goal size is smaller compared to some other sports, requiring precision and skill from players to score.

Penalty Spot

The penalty spot, similar to the one in football, is the point from which penalty strikes are taken. It is positioned 7 yards (6.4 meters) from the goalmouth, offering a direct shot at the goal.

Key Areas on the Hockey Pitch

Striking Circle

Also known as the shooting circle, goal circle, or simply the ‘D,’ the striking circle is a ‘D’-shaped area measuring 16 yards out from the goal post. To score a goal, an attacking player must be within this area when striking the ball.

Back Line

The back line marks the lengthwise end of the hockey pitch, running parallel to the goal line. It measures 60 yards in length and plays a critical role in defining the boundaries of play.

Half-Way Line

The half-way line divides the hockey field into two equal halves. It serves as the starting point for the game and for restarts after goals are scored.

The 25-Yard Line

This line is located 25 yards (22 meters) from the goal in each attacking portion of the pitch. Intentional infringements within this area can result in the award of a penalty corner, making it a significant strategic zone.

Surface Consideration for Hockey Pitch

While hockey has traditionally been played on grass, astroturf pitches are now more common due to their consistent and smooth surface. Astroturf allows for faster ball movement and can be used in various weather conditions. Before top competition games, the astroturf surface is usually watered to enhance playability.

Who is the Inventor of the Pascaline?

The Pascaline, also known as the Arithmetic Machine, stands as a significant milestone in the history of computing devices. Invented by the renowned French mathematician and philosopher Blaise Pascal, this mechanical calculator revolutionized computation during the 17th century.

Inventor of the Pascaline

In 1642, at the age of just 19, Pascal invented the Pascaline, also known as the Arithmetic Machine. This device was a mechanical calculator capable of performing addition and subtraction through a system of gears and wheels. It was a groundbreaking development in the field of computing, representing one of the earliest mechanical calculators designed for practical use.

Blaise Pascal and His Contributions

Blaise Pascal, a French mathematician and philosopher born in 1623, is renowned for his contributions to mathematics, physics, and philosophy. In the early 17th century, Pascal embarked on designing a mechanical calculator to ease the burden of arithmetic computations.

Development and Presentation of Pascaline

Over the course of three years, from 1642 to 1645, Pascal refined his invention, creating approximately 50 prototypes before presenting the final version to the public. The Pascaline was introduced in 1645 and dedicated to Pierre Séguier, the Chancellor of France at that time.

Functionality and Design of the Pascaline

The Pascaline operated on a system of interlocking mechanical gears, each representing a digit from 0 to 9. By turning a handle, users could input numbers and perform addition or subtraction operations automatically. The device featured a compact and efficient design, embodying Pascal’s innovative approach to solving mathematical challenges of his era.

Legacy and Impact of the Pascaline

Although the Pascaline was not widely produced commercially, it laid the foundation for subsequent developments in computing machinery. Pascal’s invention demonstrated the feasibility of mechanical calculators and inspired later inventors and mathematicians to explore further advancements in computational technology.
