RBI’s Diwali’s Plan Transporting 102 Tonnes from England

On Dhanteras, October 29, 2024, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) revealed that it successfully transported an impressive 102 tonnes of gold from the Bank of England to secure storage facilities in India. This strategic move was part of the RBI’s meticulous planning to ensure the safe and discreet transfer of such a significant quantity of gold, reinforcing the nation’s reserves while aligning with the festive spirit of the occasion.

Announcement

  • On Dhanteras (October 29, 2024), the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) disclosed the transportation of 102 tonnes of gold from the Bank of England to secure facilities in India.

Objective

  • This transfer aimed to reinforce India’s gold reserves and ensure the safety of the nation’s financial assets amid global geopolitical tensions.

Transportation Strategy

  • The RBI implemented a meticulous and discreet plan for the secure transfer of the gold, highlighting its commitment to safeguarding national resources.

Current Gold Holdings

  • The RBI’s total gold reserves amounted to 854.73 metric tonnes as of the 43rd Half-Yearly Report on Management of Foreign Exchange Reserves (April-September 2024).
  • 510.46 metric tonnes held domestically.
  • 324.01 metric tonnes stored with the Bank of England and the Bank for International Settlements (BIS).
  • 20.26 metric tonnes held as gold deposits.

Recent Trends

  • Since September 2022, approximately 214 tonnes of gold have been repatriated to India, with 100 tonnes returned in May 2024.

Increase in Gold’s Share

  • The share of gold in India’s total foreign exchange reserves rose from 8.15% at the end of March 2024 to 9.32% by the end of September 2024.

Reason for Storing Gold in England

  • The RBI utilizes the Bank of England for gold storage primarily due to its immediate access to the London bullion market, where it remains the world’s second-largest gold custodian, following the New York Federal Reserve.

Importance of Gold Reserves

  • The strategic management of gold reserves is crucial for India, providing a buffer against economic uncertainties and enhancing overall financial stability.

About Economic Significance of Gold

Historical Role as Reserve Currency

  • Gold served as the world’s reserve currency until the US abandoned the gold standard in 1971. Its intrinsic value continues to make it relevant amid currency volatility.

Intrinsic Value and Inflation Hedge

  • Gold retains its value better than currencies, particularly during inflationary periods, due to its limited supply.

Impact on Currency Strength

  • A country with substantial gold reserves can bolster its currency value, especially when gold prices rise, enhancing its export competitiveness.

Key Reasons for RBI’s Gold Accumulation

Counteracting Negative Interest Rates

  • The real interest rate on US government bonds has turned negative due to rising inflation, increasing demand for gold as a stable asset.

Geopolitical Hedge

  • In light of geopolitical uncertainties (e.g., the Russia-Ukraine conflict), gold maintains its intrinsic value, providing a safeguard against potential currency depreciation.

Diversification of Forex Reserves

  • Gold is viewed as a safer, liquid asset that performs well during crises, making it a valuable addition to forex reserves.

Typhoon Kong-rey Unleashes Fury on Taiwan with Strong Winds

Typhoon Kong-rey made landfall in Taiwan on 31st October 2024, prompting a swift response from authorities as they took extensive precautions to ensure public safety. Schools, offices, and financial markets were closed, and thousands of residents were evacuated from high-risk areas.

Typhoon Kong-rey Overview

  • Made landfall on Taiwan’s eastern coast around 13:40 local time (04:40 GMT).

Preparatory Measures

  • Supermarkets experienced significant shortages as residents prepared for the typhoon.
  • Thousands of residents were evacuated from high-risk areas.

Typhoon Characteristics

  • The deadliest recent typhoon, Morakot in 2009, resulted in nearly 900 fatalities due to flooding and landslides, with record rainfall of 2,777 mm.
  • Forecasters predict Kong-rey may bring up to 1,200 mm of rainfall to eastern Taiwan from October 29 to November 1.

Government Response

  • The defense ministry has placed 36,000 soldiers on standby for potential rescue operations.
  • Approximately 8,600 individuals have been evacuated from vulnerable regions.
  • Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te advised citizens to remain indoors and avoid hazardous areas, including beaches.

International Day to End Impunity for Crimes Against Journalists 2024

The International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists (IDEI) is observed each year on November 2. Recognized by the United Nations, this day highlights the urgent need to protect journalists and address the widespread impunity for crimes committed against them. By drawing global attention to these issues, IDEI advocates for safer conditions for journalists and calls for justice and accountability to uphold freedom of the press worldwide.

Background and Significance

  • IDEI was proclaimed by the UN General Assembly in Resolution A/RES/68/163.
  • November 2, commemorating the 2013 assassination of two French journalists in Mali.

Purpose

  • Highlights the urgent need to address violence and impunity faced by journalists, essential for freedom of expression and access to information.
  • The Resolution calls on Member States to implement measures to prevent violence, ensure accountability, and bring perpetrators to justice.

Theme of 2024

  • “Safety of Journalists in Crises and Emergencies,” focusing on the protection of journalists in conflict zones and crisis situations.
  • Despite a decrease in journalist deaths in conflict zones since 2017, UNESCO reported a rise in 2023-2024.
  • Journalists in high-risk areas face killings, disappearances, torture, detention, equipment confiscation, and harassment.
  • Physical attacks, restricted access, and damaged infrastructure create “zones of silence” in conflict areas.

Global Impunity and Its Impacts

  • UNESCO records indicate that nine out of ten journalist killings go unpunished, fostering a climate of fear.
  • Over 1,700 journalists have been killed since 1993; Latin America and the Caribbean have the highest murder rates.
  • Impunity leads to self-censorship, hindering the flow of information and enabling human rights abuses and corruption.

Impact on Women Journalists

  • 73% of surveyed women journalists reported online harassment, threats, and intimidation.
  • Women journalists face unique challenges, particularly with increased online violence.

UN Plan of Action on the Safety of Journalists

  • This plan is the UN’s first coordinated effort to address safety and impunity for crimes against journalists.
  • Engages UN bodies, governments, media organizations, and civil society to improve journalists’ safety.
  • Increased visibility, policy developments, and safety mechanisms in over 50 countries.
  • The protection of journalists is recognized in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

2024 IDEI Events

  • This year’s event will take place at the African Union Headquarters in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, on November 6-7.

Long-term Vision

  • The 10th anniversary of the UN Plan emphasizes the need to recommit to journalist protection and adapt to new challenges.
