The legendary media entrepreneur who ha transformed global television news by launching world’s first 24 hour news channel Ted Turner has died at the age of 87. According to Turner Enterprises he was passed away peacefully on 6th May, 2026. His death marks end of an era in modern broadcasting and he was widely credited with revolutionizing television news and left behind a global media legacy. He is known for his bold personality and ambitious vision and built the empire which have reshaped the cable television, sports broadcasting and international journalism.
The Man Who Created CNN
On June 1, 1980 Ted Turner has launched the CNN and it was the world’s first 24-hour all news television network.
At that time when television news was limited mostly to short evening bulletins he had introduced a completely different concept of nonstop live news coverage from around the world.
Initially the many experts believed the idea would fail. Critics also questioned whether audiences would watch news all day.
However the CNN eventually transformed the journalism forever by delivering the live coverage of global events as they happened.
With this the network became especially influential during major international crises and conflicts and making real time global news coverage a standard feature of modern media.
How Ted Turner Revolutionized Television
Before creating the CNN Turner had already started the changing the television industry.
After taking over his father’s billboard advertising company after his father’s death, Turner has expanded into radio and television broadcasting.
In the year 1970 he has acquired the struggling television station in Atlanta called Channel 17.
He later transformed it into WTBS which is America’s first ‘superstation’ using satellite technology to broadcast nationwide.
This innovation helped pave the way for the expansion of the cable television across the United States.
Building a Media and Sports Empire
Apart from CNN Turner also launched the several influential television channels which includes the,

He also became the owner of the major sports franchises, including the,
- Atlanta Braves (Baseball)
- Atlanta Hawks (Basketball)
Under the his leadership the Atlanta Braves gained nationwide popularity through the cable broadcasting and became known as ‘America’s Team.’

Ted Turner earned the nickname of ‘The Mouth of the South’ because of his outspoken and fearless personality.
