India Postpones Fourth India-Africa Forum Summit Amid Ebola Health Emergency in Africa

India has postponed the Fourth India-Africa Forum Summit which was schedule to be held in the last week of the May 2026 due to the growing Ebola outbreak in parts of Africa. This decision came at that time when the World Health Organization declared the situation in Congo and Uganda as a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC).

India Postpones Fourth India-Africa Forum Summit

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) announced that the upcoming summit has been deferred after extensive consultations between India, the African Union Chairperson, and the African Union Commission.

The decision was taken after the reviewing of the evolving public health situation in Africa and assessing the feasibility of hosting such a major international gathering safely in the country.

The summit was expected to be an important diplomatic platform to strengthen the India-Africa cooperation across multiple sectors.

Why Was the Summit Postponed?

The immediate reason for postponement is the Ebola virus outbreak affecting parts of Africa.

The recently rising of cases in the country like Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda has raised the concern worldwide.

The World Health Organization recently declared the situation a PHEIC and it signaled the seriousness of the outbreak and the need for coordinated international attention.

Given the health emergency, both India and African leadership decided that postponement was the most responsible course of action.

India Reaffirms Support for Africa

Even as the summit has been delayed, India has strongly reiterated the its support for African nations.

According to the MEA, India remains fully prepared to provide the assistance to Africa’s public health response efforts.

This includes possible support for the,

• Africa CDC initiatives
• Health preparedness program
• Strategic medical coordination
• Capacity-building support

India has strongly emphasized that any support would align with the principle of an Africa-led response.

Recently, India has also signed the digital cooperation agreements with seven African nations which will support the digital governance and technology partnerships.

The India-Africa Forum Summit was launched in the year 2008 as a platform to strengthening political, economic and strategic ties between the India and African nations.

Previous Summits

The third summit in the year 2015 had witnessed participation from leaders of all 54 African countries and making it one of India’s largest diplomatic events.
