Bengaluru Surpasses Mumbai to Become India’s Second-Busiest Domestic Airport

The Kempegowda International Airport of Bengaluru has overtaken the Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport and become the India’s second busiest domestic airport. As per the recent passenger traffic data, Bengaluru had handled the more domestic passengers than Mumbai in April 2026.

Bengaluru airport has recorded approximately 3.28 million domestic passengers in the month April 2026 and with this it surpassed the Mumbai airport which had handled around 2.89 million domestic passengers during the same period. This marks the important milestone for the Bengaluru’s aviation sector and reflects the city’s rapidly expanding in the domestic travel market.

As the Mumbai continues to maintain a stronger position in a overall passenger traffic because of its large international operations. Bengaluru has emerged ahead in the domestic segment.

The launch of the Navi Mumbai International Airport has become an important factor in reshaping the India’s aviation landscape. The airport began commercial operations in December 2025 and is rapidly expanding its connectivity across India.

It has already announced the services to dozens of domestic destinations and is expected to handle a growing share of passenger traffic from the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. Although Mumbai and Navi Mumbai together still handles the large volume of domestic passengers, traffic is now being distributed between two airports rather than one.
