Brendan Taylor Breaks Sachin Tendulkar’s ODI Career Record

Zimbabwe wicketkeeper batsman Brendan Taylor has broken the record held by Sachin Tendulkar for having the longest career in ODI cricket. Taylor became the record holder after participating in the first ODI between Zimbabwe and Australia in Harare on September 15, 2026, in the current three-match ODI series. According to Cricinfo, the ODI career of Taylor is now 22 years and 148 days old surpassing Tendulkar’s record of 22 years and 91 days. Sanath Jayasuriya of Sri Lanka is at number three on the list.

Brendan Taylor Breaks Sachin Tendulkar Record

The participation of Taylor in the match against Australia helped him surpass the long-held record of Sachin Tendulkar. Tendulkar played ODIs for 22 years and 91 days whereas Taylor has played for 22 years and 148 days.

Jayasuriya is next with an ODI career of 21 years and 184 days.

This record is based on the length of the ODI career of a player and not on the number of matches or runs made by the player.

Sachin Tendulkar Keeps Some Important ODI Records

Though Tendulkar is now ranked second in terms of career longevity, some of his important ODI records still stand.

Some of the records held by the ex-India batter are,

  • Most ODI runs: 18,426
  • Most ODI appearances: 463
  • First player to hit an ODI double hundred: 200 against South Africa in 2010

Tendulkar played ODIs from 1989 to 2012.

Zimbabwe Cricketer Brendan Taylor

Taylor made his ODI debut playing for Zimbabwe against Sri Lanka in April 2004 and went on to become one of the best batters of the nation. Ahead of this Tuesday’s game, he had scored 6,704 runs in 207 games in ODIs, including 11 hundreds, a national record for Zimbabwe.

The 40-year-old had initially retired from international cricket in 2021.

But Taylor came back into international cricket in 2025 when Zimbabwe was preparing for the 2027 ODI World Cup to be co-hosted by Zimbabwe’s neighbouring countries, South Africa and Namibia.

Taylor’s Banning and Return to International Cricket

Taylor disclosed in January 2022 that some people connected with corruption had approached him in 2019 and tried to tempt him into fixing matches. However, Taylor stated that he has never fixed any match but did not immediately inform the ICC about the incident for fear of the safety of his family.

He got banned from playing cricket for three and a half years. Following the ban, Taylor came back to international cricket.
