A two-year extension has been approved by the Union Cabinet for Agniveers who are not selected for regular posts after the initial completion of their tenure under the Agnipath scheme. 25 percent will be selected for regular posts in the Defense Forces on merit, out of which the remaining 75 percent can extend their service. They will then be given an offer for regular enrollment as a soldier, provided they are willing and meet selection criteria. The decision comes after a four-year analysis of the scheme and performance of Agniveers.
New Engagement Pathway for Agniveers
A new pathway will be provided to Agniveers, which includes,
- 25 percent regular enlistment: 25 percent of the Agniveers will be offered regular posts in Defense Forces based on merit.
- Remainder 75 percent can extend engagement: The remainder of Agniveers can choose to extend their engagement for two years. However, this has been approved based on recommendations from the Defense Forces.
- Offer regular enlistment: Following the 2-year extension, they will be offered regular enlistment. Provided they are willing and meet the criteria.
They are not guaranteed regular posts, this depends on whether they meet the criteria.
Improved Pay and Benefits
During the second engagement period Agniveers will receive increased pay, an improved Seva Nidhi package and seniority benefits.
This is to reward their continued service and take into consideration their aspirations.
The Cabinet approved the extra engagement following detailed analysis. This aims to take into consideration Agniveer aspirations whilst maintaining efficiency.
Successes of the Agnipath Scheme
The Defense Forces analyzed the scheme following four years of operation.
This showed that,
- Broader recruitment: Agniveers have been recruited from across districts of the country.
- Improved transparency: A more standardized and transparent recruitment process has been implemented.
- High fitness: Agniveers have been shown to be very fit with high morale, motivation, competitiveness and discipline.
- Improved skills: Their service has resulted in improved skills, adaptability to technology and education.
- Opened up opportunities for women: Opportunities have been opened up in various Defense Forces branches.
Positive results were found relating to the skills, motivation, fitness and technology capabilities of Agniveers.
Why has the Cabinet Approved the Extension?
Following feedback from Defence Forces regarding the performance of Agniveers during the first 4 years of the scheme. This was analyzed with regard to organizational needs and efficiency.
The extension of two years aims to provide more Agniveers with the opportunity to continue their service within the Defense Forces.
They will also have another option to enter regular posts, provided they meet the criteria.
The Cabinet have decided to continue with the Agnipath Scheme.
