The Rath Yatra of Puri is a very famous and sacred festival in Odisha. On the third day of Rath Yatra 2025, the occasion known as Gahana Bije takes place on 29th June. This day is very special as the deities – Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra and Devi Subhadra – rest at the Gundicha Temple, their aunt’s home, after their long journey from the main Jagannath Temple.
Day 3 of Jagannath Rath Yatra- Gahana Bije
Gahana Bije is the day when the deities finally settle inside the Gundicha Temple, which is their temporary home for the next few days. The word ”Gahana” means deep or secret and ”Bije” means settling. It shows that the deities have entered their private space to rest away from public view.
Time for Rest and Rejuvenation
After their journey in the grand chariots, the deities are believed to be tired. So, this day is for them to rest and regain energy. It is believed that the gods, like humans, need time to relax. Therefore, no public viewing or darshan happens on this day.
Daily Rituals and Devotional Songs
Even though the deities are resting, the daily rituals and prayers continue inside the temple. Priests offer bhoga (food), aarti and perform other religious duties. Devotees sing bhajans and devotional songs outside the temple with great love and respect.
Significance of the Gahana Bije
The Gahana Bije day is important because it shows the human side of the divine. The deities are seen not just as gods, but also as family members who need care and rest. It reminds people of the loving bond between humans and the divine.
Nine-Day Stay at Gundicha Temple
The deities will now stay inside the Gundicha Temple for a total of nine days, including the day of arrival and the day of return. During this time, special rituals, offering and celebrations continue until the Bahuda Yatra (the return journey) begins.
