GAIL and VERBIO India Partner to Advance Agricultural Residue-based CBG Projects

GAIL (India) Limited and VERBIO India have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to jointly develop agricultural residue-based compressed biogas (CBG) projects in India. This collaboration aims to turn agricultural waste into renewable energy, aligning with India’s climate objectives and enhancing rural incomes. The MoU was signed by GAIL’s Executive Director, Sumit Kishore, and VERBIO’s Managing Director, Ashish Kumar, with the event attended by Sandeep Kumar Gupta, C&MD of GAIL, and Claus Sauter, Founder/CEO of VERBIO.

Sustainable Energy Goals

The partnership seeks to harness agricultural residues to produce CBG, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and environmental impacts from stubble burning. It marks a significant stride towards energy security and the promotion of renewable bioenergy across India.

Strategic Implementation and Joint Venture

GAIL and VERBIO plan to conduct feasibility studies to identify suitable locations for greenfield CBG plants, potentially forming a Joint Venture (JV) to oversee the projects. This collaboration may also lead to GAIL acquiring equity in VERBIO’s existing CBG facility in Punjab.

Boosting Rural Economy and Farmers’ Livelihoods

The initiative will support local farmers by providing an alternative use for agricultural waste, enhancing rural economies. The project further aligns with India’s broader goals for renewable energy adoption and sustainable agriculture, showcasing a scalable model for biogas production.
