IIT-Delhi Launches First Special PhD Admission Drive for SC/ST Candidates

In a significant step towards promoting inclusivity in higher education, the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (IIT-Delhi) has launched its first-ever special PhD admission drive exclusively for Scheduled Caste (SC) and Scheduled Tribe (ST) candidates. This initiative comes in response to persistent under-representation of these communities in doctoral programmes at the premier institute and follows a recent parliamentary panel visit reviewing the implementation of constitutional safeguards for marginalised groups.

Why in News?

The initiative was launched after data revealed a significant shortfall in SC/ST representation in PhD courses at IIT-Delhi, falling short of the mandated reservation norms. The parliamentary committee’s visit in April 2025 acted as a catalyst for this proactive effort, which now invites applications until June 30, 2025, in a bid to boost seat occupancy for the reserved categories.

Key Objectives of the Special PhD Drive

• Increase SC/ST enrolment in doctoral programmes.
• Fulfil reservation norms (15% SC, 7.5% ST) as mandated by the central government.

• Despite eligibility relaxations (e.g., 5.5 CGPA for SC/ST, GATE qualification), applications from reserved category candidates have remained low.

Statistical Trends (2015-2025)

• SC PhD enrolment rose modestly from 8.88% → 9.69%.
• ST PhD enrolment increased from 0.97% → 3.28%.

Implementation Measures

• Relaxation of department-level eligibility criteria — only institute-level minimums will apply.
