India Gets First Approved Radioligand Therapy for Advanced Prostate Cancer

India has entered the new phase in precision cancer treatment with the launch of Pluvicto which is the country’s first regulatory authority approved radioligand therapy for the advanced prostate cancer. It is introduced by the Novartis and this therapy offers the highly targeted treatment approach that delivers the radiation directly to cancer cells while minimizing damage to healthy tissues.

What is Pluvicto?

Pluvicto is the radioligand therapy which is developed for eligible patients suffering from PSMA-positive metastatic prostate cancer.

It is specifically designed for those patients whose cancer has spread beyond the prostate gland.

This treatment combines the targeting molecule with the radioactive isotope Lutetium-177.

This enables the therapy to locate and attack the cancer cells with high precision.

Working of Radioligand Therapy

Radioligand therapy is often described as the “guided missile” approach to cancer treatment.

This therapy targets Prostate-Specific Membrane Antigen (PSMA), it is a protein that found in large quantities on many prostate cancer cells.

Once attached to these cancer cells, this radioactive component delivers radiation directly to the tumour.

Unlike the chemotherapy, which can affect both the healthy and cancerous cells, radioligand therapy is designed to focus primarily on to the tumour cells.

Similarly, unlike the conventional radiation therapy that is delivered externally, radioligand therapy carries a radiation inside the body directly to the cancer site.

Why is This Launch Important?

The introduction of the Pluvicto represents the major breakthrough in precision oncology in India.

It provides the new treatment option for the patients who are diagnosed with the advanced-stage prostate cancer, it is a condition where conventional therapies often have limited effectiveness.

According to industry estimates, India records nearly to 250,000 prostate cancer cases annually, with more than half diagnosed at the advanced stages.

Prostate cancer is now among the three most common cancers which are affecting urban men in the country.

The therapy’s approval offers the hope for the improved treatment outcomes and better quality of life for eligible patients.

Growing Nuclear Medicine Infrastructure in India

This launch also highlights the rapid development of the India’s nuclear medicine ecosystem.

Radioligand therapies requires the specialized infrastructure, trained personnel and strict safety protocols for handling radioactive substances. I

ndia now has more than 250 nuclear medicine centres which crating a strong foundation for the wider adoption of advanced targeted therapies.

Initially, Pluvicto will be available via selected hospitals and nuclear medicine centres and it will be imported from Novartis manufacturing facilities in Spain and Italy.

Clinical Benefits of Pluvicto

Clinical Phase III studies have demonstrated \the promising results for Pluvicto. This therapy significantly reduced the risk of the disease progression or death among eligible patients when compared with standard treatment approaches.

It also improved the radiographic progression-free survival and supported better patient-reported quality-of-life outcomes and making it as one of the most promising developments in the modern cancer care.

Radioligand Therapy: The Future of Precision Oncology

Globally, radioligand therapy is emerging as one of the fastest-growing areas in to precision oncology.

It combines the advances in molecular imaging, nuclear medicine and targeted therapy to create the highly personalized cancer treatments.

Researchers are currently exploring the application of this technology for several other types of cancers beyond the prostate cancer and potentially transforming future cancer treatment strategies worldwide.
