India Launches First Non-GMO High-Expansion Popcorn Maize Hybrid

To attain the agricultural independence in the country, India has released the first-ever non-GMO and high-expansion popcorn maize hybrid seeds. The indigenous hybrid was released on August 24, 2026, at Musunuru in the Eluru district of Andhra Pradesh by Vice President C. P. Radhakrishnan. The development is indeed very significant since India has always relied on the foreign hybrid technology to produce premium popcorn maize.

What Happened at Musunuru?

The launch of the indigenous hybrid took place during the function held on the occasion of Gourmet Popcornica. He also felicitated the highly successful farmers of Andhra Pradesh and seven other states along with the partners of the business.

He described the indigenous hybrid as Aatmanirbhar Bharat. He went on to add that technology, innovation, and the development of indigenous seeds will be key for the advancement of Indian agriculture.

Speaking about S.B.P. Pattabhi Rama Rao and Gourmet Popcornica, the Vice-President said that the journey of the two from an indigenous Andhra Pradesh based business to become a big popcorn maize processing company is one to be commended. Farmer business cooperation has been an important factor for increasing marketing opportunities and incomes for thousands of farmers.

As part of his visit, the Vice-President inspected the factory premises and the cold storage facilities of the company and got details regarding maize processing, quality control and packaging and storage.

According to C. P. Radhakrishnan, farmers are the strength of the country and innovation in agriculture in India is essential. He says that a strong India will be created by farmers farming the land, scientists improving the seeds and entrepreneurs creating markets.
