Indian Army Launches Bharat Rice for Troops; Signs Logistics MoU with FCI

Bharat Rice, a program undertaken by the Indian Army, was unveiled on October 12th 2026, with the aim of improving the quality and delivery of rice distributed to soldiers. The ceremony to unveil the project was graced by the Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Union Minister for Consumer Affairs, Food, and Public Distribution Pralhad Joshi in New Delhi. In addition, the Indian Army entered into a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Food Corporation of India (FCI) to have access to the latter’s warehouses and handling facilities.

Bharat Rice Initiative

This initiative has been undertaken by the Directorate General of Supplies and Transport of the Indian Army and has been taken into account on the basis of regular feedback given by soldiers regarding the quality of rations.

This initiative is meant to offer rice that conforms to the specified military standards while making transportation and handling easier, especially for forward areas and hilly terrains.

The rice would be supplied by the National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India Limited (NAFED) during FY 2026-27.

The rice would be subjected to quality control tests and should not have any foreign particles mixed up with it. It should contain negligible amounts of damaged, discoloured, and broken grains. The rice would be supplied in 10 kg and 30 kg bags to make handling and transportation easy for the personnel operating in remote areas.

Unlike the previous model, where the Army depots would collect rice from the nearby FCI depots, the new process would ensure that the rice is supplied directly to Army Supply Depots, including Ladakh and the Northeast.

MoU Between the Indian Army and FCI

An MoU has been entered into between the Indian Army and the Food Corporation of India in order to allow the Indian Army to utilize the infrastructure of FCI in case of contingencies. This agreement will be in force for five years and may be renewed with the mutual consent of both parties.

The MoU covers,

  • Warehousing and storage: Use of the warehouses and storage facilities available with FCI, including the modern silos.
  • Labour and material handling equipment: Use of labour and material handling equipment in case of contingency situations.
  • Logistics: Collaboration between Army Supply and Transport formations with Regional/Divisional Offices of FCI.
  • Forward deployment: Additional warehousing, fast mobilisation and deployment of rations, stores and equipment near operational area.

The MoU aims to incorporate the civilian infrastructure in the military logistics planning process. It is consistent with the ‘whole-of-government’ approach and in line with the vision of PM Gati Shakti.

Impact of Operation Sindoor on the Initiative

According to the Ministry of Defence, the MoU was based on the lessons learnt from Operation Sindoor, which emphasised the importance of having logistics infrastructure able to deal with contingency situations quickly and sustain operations over an extended period of time.

Defence Minister, Shri Rajnath Singh, remarked that the preparedness of the armed forces in today’s times also requires efficient supply chains, capacity for storage, transportation, and replenishment. Civilian infrastructure can be utilised by the Indian Army for quick mobilisation of resources during any emergency situation.
