Indian mathematician Mahesh Kakde, a professor at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru, has been awarded the 2026 Ramanujan Prize for Young Mathematicians from Developing Countries for his outstanding contributions to number theory.
The award recognises Kakde’s important research in algebraic number theory, particularly his work on Iwasawa theory, the Gross-Stark conjecture and the Brumer-Stark conjecture.
What is the Ramanujan Prize?
The Ramanujan Prize for Young Mathematicians from Developing Countries is awarded to outstanding mathematicians working in developing countries.
It is jointly awarded by:
- International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP)
- International Mathematical Union (IMU)
The award is meant for mathematicians below the age of 45 who have made significant contributions to mathematical research while working in developing countries.
The prize was established in 2005 and carries a cash award of USD 10,000.
Why Was Mahesh Kakde Honoured?
Mahesh Kakde was recognised for his fundamental contributions to algebraic number theory.
His research has helped mathematicians better understand deep relationships between numbers, equations and algebraic structures.
His major areas of work include:
- Iwasawa theory
- Gross-Stark conjecture
- Brumer-Stark conjecture
- Algebraic number theory
- Problems connected with Hilbert’s 12th problem
What is Algebraic Number Theory?
Number theory is the branch of mathematics concerned with numbers and their properties.
Algebraic number theory goes a step further and uses algebraic methods to study numbers and the structures associated with them.
It seeks to understand questions such as:
- How numbers behave in different mathematical systems
- Relationships between equations and number structures
- Patterns involving prime numbers
- Properties of algebraic numbers
- Links between different areas of mathematics
Mahesh Kakde’s Work in Iwasawa Theory
One of Kakde’s major areas of research is Iwasawa theory.
In simple terms, Iwasawa theory studies how certain mathematical properties change when number systems are extended into increasingly complex structures.
Kakde developed important results that helped explain these changes, including cases where the underlying mathematical systems do not behave in a simple or predictable way.
His work has contributed to a deeper understanding of some long-standing problems in modern number theory.
Work on Gross-Stark and Brumer-Stark Conjectures
Kakde has also made major contributions to the:
- Gross-Stark conjecture
- Brumer-Stark conjecture
These are long-standing mathematical conjectures dealing with relationships between special values of mathematical functions and algebraic number fields.
His research has helped connect different areas of number theory that were previously difficult to relate.
Link to Hilbert’s 12th Problem
Kakde’s work also has implications for Hilbert’s 12th problem.
The problem is one of the famous 23 mathematical problems proposed by German mathematician David Hilbert in 1900.
In broad terms, Hilbert’s 12th problem asks whether certain important numbers associated with mathematical systems can be described in a systematic way.
Kakde’s research contributes to understanding some of the deeper structures connected with this problem.
Education and Academic Career
Mahesh Kakde was born and educated in India.
He completed his Bachelor of Mathematics from the Indian Statistical Institute (ISI), Bengaluru.
He later studied at the University of Cambridge, where he completed his:
- Master’s degree
- PhD in Pure Mathematics in 2008
He subsequently worked at several leading international institutions, including:
- Princeton University
- University College London
- King’s College London
He joined the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru, as a professor in 2019.
Other Major Honours
The 2026 Ramanujan Prize adds to a growing list of recognitions received by Mahesh Kakde.
His other major honours include:
- Infosys Prize in Mathematical Sciences – 2022
- Invited speaker at the International Congress of Mathematicians
- Named among Asian Scientist 100 – 2023
These honours recognise his contribution to advanced mathematical research.
