ISRO and ASA Join Hands for Gaganyaan Mission

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has entered into a significant collaboration with the Australian Space Agency (ASA) to support India’s first crewed spaceflight program, Gaganyaan. On November 20, 2024, the two space agencies signed an Implementation Agreement (IA) to enhance cooperation on crew and crew module recovery, which is crucial for the success of the Gaganyaan mission. This agreement will provide India with the necessary assistance to ensure the safe recovery of astronauts in the event of a contingency during the mission.

Purpose of the Agreement

• The IA formalizes cooperation between ISRO and ASA on the recovery of crew and crew modules for the Gaganyaan mission. 
• This will ensure that both agencies are prepared to handle any contingencies during the ascent phase, particularly if the crew module aborts near Australian waters.

• The agreement was signed by D K Singh, Director of ISRO’s Human Space Flight Centre (HSFC), in Bengaluru, and Jarrod Powell, General Manager of ASA’s Space Capability Branch, in Canberra.

Objective of Gaganyaan Mission

• The Gaganyaan mission aims to demonstrate India’s capability to carry out a Low Earth Orbit (LEO) mission with an Indian Crew Module. 
• The mission will carry up to three astronauts for a duration of up to three days in space and is designed to safely recover the crew module after the mission’s completion.

Role of ASA

• ASA will play a crucial role in the support system for the Gaganyaan mission by providing search and rescue operations in the event of a contingency and ensuring safe recovery of the crew module.
• This support is particularly significant for any abort scenario during the ascent phase, which may occur near Australian waters.
