Karnataka Leads in EV Infrastructure Development

Karnataka has emerged as the frontrunner in India’s electric vehicle (EV) infrastructure development, boasting the highest number of public charging stations according to Bureau of Energy Efficiency statistics.

Karnataka tops in number of public charging stations for EVs: Key Points

  1. Public Charging Station Dominance: Karnataka leads with 5,059 public EV charging stations, surpassing Maharashtra and Delhi.

  2. State-wise Comparison: Maharashtra follows with 3,079 stations, and Delhi with 1,886. Other states with notable numbers include Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan.

  3. EV Adoption: Uttar Pradesh leads in EV adoption with 7.45 lakh vehicles, followed by Maharashtra and Karnataka.

  4. District-wise Distribution: Bengaluru Urban district leads with 85% of Karnataka’s charging infrastructure, boasting 4,281 charging stations.
  5. Bescom’s Role: Bengaluru Electricity Supply Company Limited (Bescom) has played a crucial role, witnessing a significant surge in EV registrations from 2020 to 2023.
  6. Funding Sources: Charging stations were set up utilizing various sources including the Union government’s FAME scheme, Bescom’s capital expenditure, and state transport department funds.
  7. Future Plans: Karnataka’s EV Policy 2023-28 aims to create jobs and attract investment, with plans to establish additional charging locations, including fast charging stations at toll plazas.
