Lucknow Gets New Regional Meteorological Centre, Boosting Weather Forecasting in Uttar Pradesh

India’s weather forecasting capabilities strengthened more as the new Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) in Lucknow.. This facility was jointly inaugurated by the Respectable Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and Union Minister Jitendra Singh on 8th of June, 2026. This new centre is expected to improve the weather monitoring, forecasting accuracy, disaster preparedness and climate services across the Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand and neighboring regions.

Regional Meteorological Centre Established in Lucknow

The newly inaugurated Regional Meteorological Centre in the Lucknow and it marks a significant step towards the decentralizing India’s weather forecasting system.

The centre will serve the states like Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand and the adjoining regions by providing the more localized weather forecasts, early warnings and climate-related services.

It will also strengthen the regional forecasting capabilities and improve the dissemination of weather advisories to government agencies, farmers, aviation authorities and the general public.

The facility is also expected to support the disaster management efforts by providing timely and accurate weather information.

Expansion of India’s Meteorological Infrastructure

Speaking at the event, Dr. Jitendra Singh highlighted that the remarkable expansion of the India’s meteorological infrastructure over the last decade.

India had only 17 Doppler Weather Radars in the year 2014. Today, this network has been expanded to 50 operational radars. Under the Mission Mausam, another 50 Doppler Weather Radars are planned and it will taking the total number close to 100 within the next two years.

This expansion is helping to improve real-time weather monitoring and enabling more precise forecasting across the country.

Mission Mausam to Strengthen Weather Monitoring

Mission Mausam is the Government of India’s flagship initiative which aimed at to modernizing weather forecasting systems and climate services.

The program focuses on to the expanding observational infrastructure, deploying advanced forecasting technologies, improving warning systems and enhancing climate resilience.

With the addition of the new Doppler Weather Radars, wind profilers and modern forecasting tools, Mission Mausam seeks to provide the accurate, location-specific and impact-based weather forecasts that can help to save lives and reduce economic losses from extreme weather events.

Major Improvement in UP’s Weather Infrastructure

Dr. Jitendra Singh also emphasized that Uttar Pradesh has witnessed substantial growth in the meteorological infrastructure during the last decade.

In the year 2014, the state had only one Doppler Weather Radar. Today, three radars are operational in state, while several additional systems are being commissioned.

The state’s network of the Automatic Weather Stations has increased from 59 to 107. Automatic Rain Gauge Stations have also grown from 132 to 140, while Lightning Sensors have increased from zero to seven.

These improvements have significantly enhanced the state’s ability to monitor the weather conditions and issue timely warnings.

Benefits for Disaster Management and Public Safety

This upgraded forecasting system plays the critical role to reducing disaster risks.

Also the improved weather monitoring enables early warnings for the floods, flash floods, thunderstorms, lightning strikes, heatwaves, cloudbursts, avalanches, and landslides.

Such warnings also help authorities to take preventive action and it minimize damage to life and property.
