Maharashtra Day 2023: History
- Maharashtra had been a part of the Bombay Presidency, which covered a vast area, including present-day Maharashtra, Gujarat, and parts of Karnataka, for over a century prior to the separation.
- However, there was growing demand for a separate state for Marathi-speaking people, due to cultural and linguistic differences with Gujarat.
- The movement for a separate state gained momentum in the 1950s, and after prolonged political negotiations, the Bombay Reorganization Act was passed in Parliament in April 1960.
- The new state of Maharashtra was created out of the Marathi-speaking parts of Bombay Presidency, while Gujarat was established by merging the Gujarati-speaking areas.
