Microsoft Shuts Down Pakistan Office After 25 Years

Microsoft, the well-known technology company, has closed its office in Pakistan after working there for 25 years. The company made this move on July 3, 2025, as part of its global plan to reduce its workforce and focus more on cloud-based services. This decision is seen as worrying by many experts because it reflects problems in Pakistan’s business environment.

Global Strategy and Job Cuts

Microsoft said it is closing its limited operations in Pakistan as part of a worldwide plan to change the way it works. The company is moving to a cloud-based model and will now depend more on its local partners and regional offices, especially in Ireland. Recently, Microsoft also cut about 9,100 jobs worldwide, which is around 4% of its total employees.

Microsoft’s Role in Pakistan

Microsoft was not running a full business in Pakistan. It only had liaison offices that worked with government, education, and enterprise clients. Over the past few years, most of its work had already moved to local partners, and its software licenses and deals were handled from outside the country.

Reactions from Experts and Leaders

Jawwad Rehman, former Country Manager of Microsoft Pakistan, said the decision shows how tough the business situation is. He asked the Pakistani government and the IT Minister to act fast and make strong plans to keep tech companies in the country.
Former President Arif Alvi also shared his concern. He said that Microsoft had once thought of expanding in Pakistan, but due to instability, they chose Vietnam instead by late 2022. He called the company’s exit a “lost opportunity” and a warning sign for the country’s future.
