On the occasion of World Tourism Day, the Ministry of Tourism launched “Paryatan Mitra” and “Paryatan Didi,” a responsible tourism initiative aimed at improving tourist experiences across India. The initiative focuses on empowering local communities, especially women and youth, to serve as ambassadors and storytellers of their destinations, enhancing hospitality, cleanliness, and sustainability.
Key Objectives
The initiative, inspired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision, aims to promote tourism as a means of social inclusion, employment, and economic growth. The program focuses on training individuals in hospitality, safety, and sustainability, while emphasizing cleanliness and the importance of a positive tourist experience.
Pilot Locations
The program was piloted in six tourist destinations:
- Orchha, Madhya Pradesh
- Gandikota, Andhra Pradesh
- Bodh Gaya, Bihar
- Aizawl, Mizoram
- Jodhpur, Rajasthan
- Sri Vijaya Puram, Andaman & Nicobar Islands
Role of Locals
Key local stakeholders, including cab drivers, hotel staff, tour guides, street vendors, and police personnel, are being trained to act as “Paryatan Mitras,” focusing on enhancing the tourist experience through storytelling and local pride.
Training Focus Areas
Participants receive training in:
- Tourism-specific skills: Heritage walks, food tours, craft experiences, homestays, and nature treks.
- Hospitality and Sustainability: In line with the philosophy of ‘Athithi Devo Bhava.’
- Digital Literacy: Ensuring that new tourism products are visible to global audiences.
Employment and Empowerment
The initiative creates employment opportunities, particularly for women and youth, by enabling them to become homestay operators, food experience providers, and tour guides. Since the pilot launch, around 3,000 individuals have been trained.
