Respectable Union Minister Jyotiraditya M. Scindia has launched the Mission Senehjori. It is the comprehensive initiative which aimed at to transforming the Assam’s renowned Muga silk into a globally recognized luxury textile brand. This mission aligns with the Honorable Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of an Atmanirbhar North East and it seeks to strengthen the entire Muga silk value chain.
What is Mission Senehjori?
Mission Senehjori is the cluster based development program which is designed to build a globally competitive ecosystem around the Assam’s unique Muga silk. This initiative has been launched by the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (MDoNER) in the collaboration with the Government of Assam, the Central Silk Board, the Ministry of Textiles and several other agencies.
This mission focuses on every stage of the value chain from plant cultivation and silkworm seed production to weaving, branding, export promotion, digital traceability and tourism development.
This mission will be supported by the investment around ₹396–411 crore over three years which includes ₹136–151 crore from MDoNER and this project seeks to position Assam as the leading global centre for premium silk production.
Why Muga Silk is Special
Muga silk holds a unique position in the global textile industry. It produced exclusively in the state of Assam and it is known for its natural golden color, exceptional durability and cultural significance.
This silk is also India’s first GI-tagged silk product and providing the authenticity and geographical identity. As Assam contributes nearly 90% of the world’s Muga silk production and making it the sole producer of the authentic Muga Silk.

Mission Senehjori adopts the cluster-based strategy covering of the major Muga-producing districts of Assam, including the,

- Sivasagar
- Lakhimpur
- Dhemaji
- Dibrugarh
- Tinsukia
- Majuli
- Sualkuchi
Also the key interventions under the mission includes the,
- Strengthening the Som and Soalu host plant cultivation
- Establishing modern reeling infrastructure
- Formation of Farmer Producer Organisations (FPOs)
- Creation of Common Facility Centres (CFCs)
- GI authentication and quality assurance systems
- Digital traceability mechanisms
- Branding and export promotion under the “Senehjori” label
The initiative aims to create a premium and traceable silk ecosystem capable of competing in international luxury markets.
Expected Outcomes by the Year 2028
Mission Senehjori has set the ambitious targets to transform the sector over the next few years.
Some of the major goals includes the,
- Establishment of five modernised Muga reeling units
- Creation of a dedicated Muga Spun Mill
- Formation of 30 Farmer Producer Organisations (FPOs)
- Development of over 1,180 Farmer Interest Groups
- Regeneration of 5,000 hectares of Som and Soalu host plants
- GI-linked authentication for over a 80% of traded Muga silk
- Digital traceability coverage for more than 8,000 households
- Expansion of annual Muga silk exports to over 2,000 kilograms
These targets are expected to significantly improve productivity, quality, and market access for silk producers.
Promoting Silk Tourism in Assam
The main unique feature of Mission Senehjori is its focus on to developing the cultural and tourism ecosystem around Muga silk.
The mission proposes the,
- Development of a Muga Silk Trail
- Establishment of a Silk Tourism Park
- Organization of annual Muga Utsav festivals
These initiatives will allow the visitors to experience Assam’s silk heritage, traditional weaving practices and the local culture while generating additional income opportunities for local communities.
