Punjab Anti-Sacrilege Bill 2026 Passed Unanimously, Awaits Governor Approval

Honorable CM of Punjab Bhagwant Mann have announced that the Anti-Sacrilege Bill 2026 has been passed by the state assembly and it was sent to the Governor of State Gulab Chand Kataria for assent of the bill. The Bill was passed unanimously by the Punjab Assembly which seeks to impose the stricter punishment for acts of sacrilege which is particularly against the Guru Granth Sahib.

Key Provisions of the Anti-Sacrilege Bill 2026

This legislation which was officially titled the Jaagat Jot Sri Guru Granth Sahib Satkar (Amendment) Bill, 2026 and it proposes the tough penalties to detersuch offenses.

It includes,

• The life imprisonment for the serious acts of sacrilege.
• Also the fine up to ₹25 lakh.
• And the stronger legal framework compared to the existing laws for this purpose.

The Bill amends the Jaagat Jot Sri Guru Granth Sahib Satkar Act 2008 and aims to provide the greater protection to religious sentiments.

Why This Bill Was Introduced

The Punjab government has highlighted that current provisions under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita are not strict enough to deal with the sacrilege-related offenses.

Also the rising concerns over the such incidents led to the demand for a more strict and strong legal mechanism.

The Chief Minister also clarified that the Bill does not require the Presidential assent and it will become law once approved by the Governor Kataria.

What Happens After The Assent Approval?

In the state legislature when the bill is passed by the state assembly the bill sent to the governor for the assent. Once the bill get assent it become the law there was another provision when governor send the bill to President for the assent but this instances are very less.

So, once it receives assent this bill rules will be implemented as law in Punjab and will set the strong precedent for handling sacrilege cases.
