QS ranking on world's best cities for students: No Indian city in top 100, Mumbai 118th

Mumbai has been ranked as the best Indian city for students in the QS Best Student Cities 2024 ranking. However, its global ranking dropped to 118, indicating a decline from the previous year’s position.

None of the major Indian cities made it to the top 100 global list in the QS Best Student Cities 2024 ranking. Moreover, all the major Indian cities experienced a decline in their global rankings compared to the previous year’s standings.

QS Best Student Cities Methodology

The QS Best Student Cities ranking compares 160 premier educational destinations, including 26 new entries. Cities must have a minimum population of 250,000 and at least two universities in the QS World University rankings to be considered for the QS city ranks. The ranking takes into account 100,000 survey responses from students, incorporating their feedback, opinions, desirability, and student voice indicators.

Mumbai’s Affordability and Employer Activity Indicator

Mumbai emerged as the most affordable Indian city for students and ranked 21st globally in this indicator.
The city’s affordability is a significant advantage, attracting students seeking cost-effective study options.
Furthermore, Mumbai’s strong performance in the employer activity indicator indicates ample opportunities for graduates.

Delhi’s Prominence in Higher Education

Delhi has the highest number of higher education institutes among Indian cities listed in the World University Ranking.
Home to prestigious institutions like the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (IIT-D), University of Delhi, Jawaharlal Nehru University, and more, Delhi received a global rank of 132.

Bangalore’s Student Voice Indicator Performance

Despite experiencing a significant drop of 33 spots in the global rankings, Bangalore stood out among Indian universities in the student voice indicator.
This metric reflects the positive opinions of alumni, current students, and prospective students who aspire to stay in Bangalore after graduation.
The Indian Institute of Science (IISc) and Thapar Institute of Engineering & Technology contribute to Bangalore’s presence on the World University Ranking.

Chennai’s Struggle in Global Rankings

Chennai, while having the second-highest number of universities listed in the World University Ranking after Delhi, ranked in the bottom tier of the best student city ranking between 151 and 160. Its global rank fell by 29 places compared to the previous year.
