Ravichandran Ashwin, India’s veteran off-spinner, has made history by becoming the first capped Indian male cricketer to sign with a Big Bash League (BBL) team. He will represent Sydney Thunder in the upcoming BBL 2025–26 season, breaking a long-standing barrier in Indian cricket. Until now, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) had prohibited active Indian male players from participating in foreign T20 leagues. While Indian women have featured regularly in the Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL), men were strictly limited to domestic and IPL participation. Ashwin’s move became possible after his retirement from the Indian Premier League (IPL) earlier this year, making him eligible for international T20 franchise contracts.
Why This Move Matters
End of a Restrictive Era
- For decades, BCCI rules have prevented contracted Indian players from playing in overseas leagues, aiming to preserve the exclusivity of the IPL. While this policy continues for current players, retired individuals like Ashwin can now explore foreign leagues without restrictions.
- His signing could set a precedent for other Indian stars nearing retirement who may look to extend their careers internationally.
Strategic Timing and Dual League Commitments
- Ashwin is also signed to play in the International League T20 (ILT20) in the UAE from December 2 to January 4, which overlaps with the BBL season starting December 14. As a result, his BBL debut is expected in early January, possibly mid-season, depending on Thunder’s scheduling.
- Despite the delay, the team expects him to play a vital role during the tournament’s most crucial phase.
Cultural and Team Impact
- Ashwin’s presence adds both cricketing weight and marketing appeal.
- His association is likely to increase fan engagement, especially among Sydney’s large Indian diaspora. The franchise hopes his experience can also help develop local talent and boost their push for the playoffs.
