About SAGARMALA Projects

SAGARMALA projects refer to a series of initiatives launched by the government of India with the aim of enhancing port-led development across the country’s coastline and hinterland. To speed up the implementation of these projects, a joint review meeting is conducted periodically where stakeholders from different sectors come together to assess progress, identify issues, and find solutions to overcome bottlenecks. The objective of these meetings is to ensure that the SAGARMALA projects remain on track and are completed within the stipulated time and budget, contributing to the overall economic development of the country.

Features of SAGARMALA Project

The SAGARMALA project is an ambitious initiative launched by the Government of India in 2015. It aims to promote port-led development and harness India’s 7,500 kilometers of coastline and extensive maritime resources. The project has several key features that contribute to its overall objectives:

  • Port Infrastructure Development: SAGARMALA focuses on developing and modernizing India’s port infrastructure, including building new ports, expanding existing ports, and improving connectivity to ports through road, rail, and waterways. This infrastructure development enhances the efficiency and capacity of ports to handle increasing maritime trade.
  • Coastal Community Development: The project recognizes the importance of uplifting coastal communities and ensuring inclusive growth. It aims to generate employment opportunities, skill development, and improved living conditions for the coastal population through the promotion of coastal tourism, fisheries, and maritime-related industries.
  • Port-Linked Industrialization: SAGARMALA encourages the establishment of industries and manufacturing zones in proximity to ports, fostering port-led industrialization. This approach enables seamless integration between industrial activities and port infrastructure, reducing logistics costs, and promoting export-oriented manufacturing.
  • Efficient Port Operations: The project emphasizes optimizing port operations by adopting advanced technologies and best practices. This includes implementing digital solutions for cargo tracking and management, introducing automation in port operations, and enhancing the ease of doing business at ports through streamlined procedures and reduced paperwork.
  • Coastal Shipping and Inland Waterways: SAGARMALA seeks to promote coastal shipping as a cost-effective and eco-friendly mode of transportation. It aims to develop a comprehensive network of coastal shipping routes, along with the modernization of inland waterways, facilitating the seamless movement of cargo and reducing congestion on roads and railways.
  • Multi-Modal Logistics Parks: The project promotes the development of Multi-Modal Logistics Parks (MMLPs) near ports, integrating various modes of transportation, such as rail, road, and waterways. MMLPs serve as hubs for warehousing, value-added services, and distribution centers, enhancing the efficiency and effectiveness of the logistics sector.
  • Connectivity Enhancement: SAGARMALA focuses on improving connectivity between ports and their hinterland regions. This includes the development of road and rail networks, last-mile connectivity projects, and the establishment of dedicated freight corridors to ensure smooth and efficient movement of goods.
  • Sustainable Development: The project gives significant importance to environmental sustainability and coastal zone management. It aims to minimize the ecological impact of port and industrial activities through the adoption of green technologies, waste management initiatives, and conservation of coastal ecosystems.
