On the occasion of the birth anniversary of freedom fighter V.O. Chidambaranar, Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal inaugurated a landmark green hydrogen pilot project and laid the foundation for multiple infrastructure initiatives at V.O. Chidambaranar Port, Tuticorin, Tamil Nadu. This marks a major step toward India’s green maritime future and port-led economic growth.
The event served both as a tribute to a revolutionary maritime figure and a showcase of India’s progress in sustainable port infrastructure.
Green Hydrogen Pilot Plant: A Milestone in Clean Energy
The centerpiece of the day’s announcements was the launch of a green hydrogen pilot plant, making Tuticorin one of the early adopters of hydrogen-based energy in the Indian port sector. Green hydrogen, produced using renewable energy sources, is considered a critical component in reducing carbon emissions, especially in heavy industries and maritime transport.
This aligns with India’s broader commitment to transition to clean energy and reduce dependence on fossil fuels.
Key Projects Inaugurated and Laid
Alongside the green hydrogen plant, Minister Sonowal laid foundation stones and inaugurated several significant development projects at the port,
- Tenth Container Terminal: Spread over 7.4 hectares, this new terminal will boost cargo handling and enhance Tuticorin’s role as a key logistics hub in South India.
- 110 kV Substation: A modern substation to support the increasing energy needs of port operations.
- 6 MW Wind Energy Project: With an investment of ₹59 crore, this project further supports the port’s transition to sustainable power sources.
- Green Campus Drive: The Minister also planted trees on the port premises, reinforcing the government’s push for environmental sustainability in maritime development.
Tribute to V.O. Chidambaranar
- The timing of the event on the birth anniversary of V.O. Chidambaranar, also known as Kappal Ottiya Thamizhan, added historical and emotional depth to the proceedings. Chidambaranar was a trailblazer in India’s maritime independence movement, founding the Swadeshi Steam Navigation Company as a bold assertion of economic self-reliance during colonial rule.
- His legacy of maritime empowerment and indigenous enterprise resonates strongly with today’s push for self-reliant ports and sustainable shipping.
Strategic Importance of Tuticorin Port
Tuticorin, a key southern gateway for India’s maritime trade, is witnessing rapid modernization under the Sagarmala initiative. With these new projects, it is set to,
- Become a hub for green shipping technologies
- Expand container and cargo handling capacity
- Serve as a model for eco-friendly port operations
- Strengthen regional connectivity in Tamil Nadu and beyond
