Uttar Pradesh Reports Highest Cyber Fraud Complaints in India

The state have registered around 1.85 lakh complaints regarding cyber fraud during the initial six months of the year 2026, as revealed by the Ministry of Home Affairs, India. The complaints include many types of digital financial crimes, changing the existing perspective of cyber crime in the most populous state of India.

The figures reveal the alarming rate at which the incidents of cyber fraud are rising with the increasing trend of digital payments.

India Records More Than ₹10,178 Crores Lost to Cyber Crime

The latest figures released by the Government have provided alarming facts related to the financial drawbacks of the cyber crimes in India.

In the period between January 1 and June 30 in 2026, there were 12.7 lakh complaints regarding cyber crime throughout the nation, including alleged losses worth more than €10,178 crore.

The figures highlight the need of the hour in terms of creating awareness about cyber crime and ensuring that individuals are reporting the incidents faster.

The 5 States Experiencing the Most Amount of Cyber Fraud Complaints

According to data from the Home Ministry, the states with the highest amount of cyber fraud cases are as follows,

  1. Uttar Pradesh: 185,000
  2. Maharashtra: 158,000
  3. Karnataka: 121,000
  4. Gujarat: 97,937
  5. Bihar: 93,137

The above figures suggest that cyber fraud is not limited to one type of geographical orientation; both highly developed states and states undergoing rapid digitization suffer from the issue.

  • Always validate callers claiming to be from banks and other financial institutions, official agencies, law enforcement agencies, etc.
  • Do not click on suspicious links received in messages on WhatsApp, SMS, email, and other social media.
  • Make sure that two-factor authentication (2FA) is activated for the banking and other important online accounts.
  • Keep check bank statements, transaction alerts, and other related notifications regularly.
  • Use only original banking applications and reliable payment apps downloaded from trusted stores.
  • If you suspect someone is trying to commit the fraud against you, report it right away to the national cybercrime hotline at 1930.
