Honourable Chief Minister of Karnataka D.K. Shivakumar unveiled that, Karnataka will establish the country’s first government-driven Artificial Intelligence (AI) University, he announced the ambitious initiative during Google I/O Connect India 2026 in Bengaluru. Along with the AI University, state of Karnataka also established an AI hub to promote research, innovation, startup incubation, and industry collaboration. This move also aligns with Karnataka’s vision of becoming an “AI-native State”.
Karnataka to Establish India’s First Government-Driven AI University
While speaking at the gathering Google I/O Connect India 2026 which was held at the Bangalore International Exhibition Centre (BIEC), Honourable Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar announced that the state of Karnataka will establish India’s first government-led AI University.
This newly proposed institution will serve as the centre of excellence for artificial intelligence by,
- Developing the world-class AI talent.
- Promoting cutting-edge AI research.
- Encouraging innovation and entrepreneurship.
- Strengthening collaboration among academia, industry, and government.
- Supporting the India’s growing digital economy.
The university is also expected to play a crucial role in preparing the skilled workforce for emerging AI-driven industries.
AI Hub to Drive Research and Startup Innovation
Alongside with the AI university, Karnataka will establish an AI Hub which is dedicated to research, innovation, and startup development.
The AI Hub will function as an incubation centre where,
- Startups can develop the AI-based solutions.
- Companies can collaborate on the advanced AI research.
- Researchers can access innovation support.
- Industry and academic institutions can work together on emerging technologies.
This initiative also aims to accelerate the commercialisation of the AI technologies and strengthen Karnataka’s position as India’s leading innovation ecosystem.
Karnataka’s Vision To Become “AI-Native State”
Honourable Chief Minister Shivakumar described artificial intelligence as the defining technological revolution of the current era and said Karnataka’s long-term goal is to become an AI-native State.
Under this vision, AI will be integrated into the governance to improve public service delivery across multiple sectors.
He highlighted several practical applications of AI, including the,
- Helping teachers deliver to better education.
- Assisting doctors in early disease diagnosis.
- Providing farmers with accurate advisory services.
- Making the government services faster, more transparent, and citizen-friendly.
- Supporting the small businesses in improving competitiveness.
Collaboration with Google
During the event, Chief Minister Shivakumar has also invited Google to deepen the its partnership with Karnataka in advancing AI innovation.
He proposed collaboration in several priority sectors such as,
