Which is the Oldest Municipal Corporation of India?

Have you every wondered how big cities in India are run smoothly? Who looks after roads, water supply, and cleanliness? The answer lies in municipal corporations. These local government bodies manage cities and make sure daily life runs properly. Interestingly, this system is not new – it started many years ago during British rule. Let’s explore which is the oldest municipal corporation in India and how it began.

Oldest Municipal Corporation in India

The oldest municipal corporation in India is the Greater Chennai Corporation. It is located in Chennai and is also one of the oldest municipal bodies in the world.

It was established in the year 1688. In fact, it is considered the second oldest municipal corporation in the world, after the City of London Corporation.

How Did it Start?

The beginning of this corporation goes back to the time of the East India Company. The British wanted a proper system to manage the growing city of Madras (now Chennai).

A charter was issued in 1687, and the corporation officially started working on 29 September 1688. This was the first time a city in India got an organized system for local governance.

Why was it Important?

Before this system, there was no proper structure to manage city problems. With the formation of the municipal corporation, many important tasks became organized, such as:

  • Maintaining roads
  • Managing water supply
  • Taking care of public health
  • Collecting taxes

It was the first step toward modern city administration in India.

What Happened After that?

For many years, Chennai was the only city with a municipal corporation. Later, the system expanded to other cities.

In 1726, similar corporations were set up in:

  • Mumbai
  • Kolkata

Gradually, this model spread across the country, and today almost every big city in India has its own municipal corporation.

Role After Independence

After India became independent, the system was made stronger. The government introduced the 74th Constitutional Amendment Act 1992 to give more power and structure to urban local bodies.

This law made municipal corporation an important part of India’s democracy and ensured better management of cities.
