Why are Oceans Important?
The oceans cover more than 70% of the Earth’s surface and are vital for the lives on the planet.
According to the United Nations, the oceans generate at least 50% of the oxygen on the planet and contain the majority of biodiversity.
They are also a crucial food resource. The ocean resources provide the primary source of proteins for about one billion people on Earth.
The ocean economy is another major factor affecting people’s livelihoods. According to the UN, by 2030 about 40 million people will have jobs in ocean-based industries.
These examples show why the state of oceans has impacts that go far beyond coastal communities.
Environmental Threats to the Oceans
There are several environmental pressures impacting the oceans.
Overfishing
- The unsustainable harvesting of fish could diminish fish populations as well as break marine food chain. One of the indicators of pressure on ocean ecosystem is the depletion of fish populations.

World Oceans Day program is organised annually by the United Nations Division for Ocean Affairs and the Law of the Sea (DOALOS) in collaboration with the not for profit organization named Oceanic Global.
