Gujarat’s Pithora Painting Receives GI Tag, Empowering Rathwa Tribal Artisans

The Pithora painting of Gujarat, an ancient wall painting practice of the Rathwa tribe of Gujarat, has received a GI tag, representing a landmark achievement in the conservation of India’s unique tribal art. This recognition protects the authentic nature of this phenomenal art, shielding the individuals from imitation carrying them into new economic opprtunities.

What is Pithora Painting?

Pithora painting is an ancient form of ritual painting that is widely practiced by Rathwa, Bhilala, and Nayak tribes present in Gujarat and adjoining areas.

Whereas regular paintings are done for decorative purposes, Pithora paintings have much more to do with the rituals, spirituality, and culture of the tribes. The paintings are usually done inside people’s homes to worship Baba Pithora who is considered to be a god that brings wealth, health, peace, and good luck to the people.

These paintings have bright colors and various amazing representations like the,

  • Horses which are used as deities.
  • Tribal gods.
  • Sun and Moon.
  • Animals and birds.
  • Plants and trees.
  • Agriculture.
  • Day-to-day activities.
  • Earth and symbolization of spirituality.

The murals illustrate something different depending on the traditions and culture of each tribe.

Economic Advantages for Tribal Craftsmen.

The GI tag has a significant advantage in that it can help to uplift tribal communities.

Greater Market Recognition.

The authentic GI tagged Pithora paintings are anticipated to fetch higher prices because of the improved trust of buyers.

Fairer Remuneration to Craftsmen.

The recognition helps craftsmen to earn more through their skill by identifying authentic items.

Wider Access to Markets.

GI tagging creates the opportunity to participate in the following aspects such as,

  • National exhibitions.
  • International fairs.
  • Export markets.
  • E-commerce sites.
  • Handicraft programmes
  • Reduced Dependence on Intermediaries.

Increased visibility and branding may allow craftsmen to deal with consumers directly.

Tribal Heritage Conservation

The GI tag is significant not only from an economic perspective but even in protecting India’s intangible heritage.

Pithora painting is not only a creative form of expression but rather a dynamic cultural practice connected to various traditions and beliefs.

The acknowledgment motivates the youth from the Rathwa community to keep practicing it and not give it up because of a lack of income opportunities.

By making it economically viable, the GI tag contributes to keeping the Indian heritage alive.
