NASA has announced that Russian cosmonaut Oleg Kononenko has handed over the command of the International Space Station to Indian-origin astronaut Sunita Williams in a ceremony.

Williams, along with fellow astronaut Butch Wilmore, has been on the station since June 5, 2024, after launching aboard Boeing’s Starliner spacecraft for its first crewed flight.
Sunita Williams and Vic Willmore had originally planned to stay on the ISS for eight days.
But their return was canceled due to technical issues with the spacecraft.
They are now expected to return to Earth in February 2025.

Women in Space Leadership Programme Initiative Launches by DST

The Department of Science and technology (DST) in India with the collaboration with the British Council launches the initiative of “A Women in Space Leadership” (WiSLP) as a part of the UK-India Education and Research Initiative (UKIERI).

Focus

Main agenda of this initiative is to focus on supporting institutions in strengthening gender-inclusive practices to foster women’s leadership space sciences through developing a strategic leadership framework.

The programme would involve building sustainable mentoring networks and enhancing scientific innovation by integrating a gender perspective into critical areas such as astrophysics and telecommunications.

This initiative is supported and delivered by Coventry University,England.

This programme is a significant step towards creating a gender-inclusive environment in space sciences.

She emphasized the importance of collaboration in solving global challenges and called for increased representation of women in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) fields.

This programme is underpinned by three foundational pillars,

Intersectionality or understanding of different aspects of women’s identities
Collaborative culturally sensitive approaches that respond to opportunities and challenges in India
Using leadership theory from both social science and STEM to support female scientists to become more confident about their leadership abilities

A workshop

In Line with this initiative, a design workshop was also held in New Delhi.
Main aim was to engage academics, academic leaders, and policymakers to ensure that the leadership framework effectively addresses the unique contexts, challenges, concerns and opportunities facing women in academic leadership within space sciences and allied fields in India.

To Combat Air Pollution “Dust Free Drive” Launched in Delhi

Delhi Lieutenant Governor (LG) Shri. L. G. Saxena launched the Dust Free Drive across the cities to combat the Air Pollution. This step looks to be important ahead of the tough and harsh air pollution in the winter in the Capital of Country.

In this drive total 5 agencies will coordinate with each other for the successful campaign.

Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD),
The Public Works Department (PWD),
The New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC),
The Irrigation and Flood Control Department (I&FCD),
The Delhi Jal Board (DJB).

Remarks by LG

Pollution caused by road dust is one of the two major contributors to air pollution in Delhi.
With the rains having stopped for the past three-four days, dried up mud and silt accumulated on roads is flying high in the environment, causing major air pollution.

Days

This exercise set off a long seven to ten days campaign to clean up the city.

Expectations

It would help mitigate air pollution in the capital and prevent waterlogging in October when the rains are expected to return.
Even if it rains, wet mud or silt has to be continuously removed to prevent it from choking drains and sewer lines.

Collection and Dumping

The collected waste has been deposited at designated dumping sites for reprocessing and bioremediation, marking an important step toward environmental sustainability,

Comprehensive Plan for Managing Pollution

The task force will review measures against different sources of pollution, including,

Stubble Burning: Burning of leftover crops, mainly paddy stubble, which adds to the smog.
Vehicle Emissions: Pollution from cars, trucks, and other vehicles on the road.
Construction Dust: Dust from building sites that pollutes the air.

The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) has launched a dedicated Foreign Portfolio Investor Outreach Cell as part of the Alternative Investment Fund and Foreign Portfolio Investors Department (AFD).

Aim

This cell will focus on direct engagement with Foreign Portfolio Investors (FPIs), and supporting them in accessing the Indian securities market seamlessly.

Key Responsibilities

Providing guidance to prospective FPIs during the pre-application stage.
Including assistance with documentation and compliance processes.
Offering support during the onboarding phase.
Resolving any operational challenges that may arise during the registration process or thereafter.

Operation

The cell operates under Sebi’s Alternative Investment Fund and Foreign Portfolio Investors Department (AFD).

Best Tourism Villages Competition-2024 Winner Revealed By Ministry

The Ministry of Tourism in Government of India announced the winners of the Best Tourism Villages Competition 2024 on the occasion of World Tourism Day 2024. This award competition was the 2nd edition since its launching.

What is it?

The Best Tourism Villages Competition seeks to honor a village that best exemplifies a rural tourism destination.
It showcases the renowned cultural and natural assets, preserves and promotes community-based values, goods, and lifestyles of the villages in India.
It promotes the commitment of the villages towards sustainability in all of its aspects – economic, social, and environmental.

Goal

Its goal is to make tourism one of the drivers of positive change, rural development, and community well-being.

Objectives of the Competition

Reduce disparities between development of rural tourism destinations.
Progress in empowering the rural population.
Enhance attraction capability and encourage rural change.
Strengthen multi-level governance, collaborations, and community engagement.
Boost connection, infrastructure, financial access, and investment. Advancement and digitalization.
Develop new products and integrate value chains.
Promote the connection between resilient, equitably distributed, and sustainable food systems and tourism.
Increase the conservation of natural and cultural resources.
Encourage sustainable methods to make better use of resources, reduce emissions, and reduce waste.

Background

The first edition of the Best Tourism Villages Competition in 2023 saw applications from 795 villages.
In the second edition of the Best Tourism Villages Competition, a total of 991 applications were received from 30 States and UTs.

Eligibility Criteria

Low population density and not exceeding 25,000 inhabitants.
Located in the radius of famous places, Tourist destinations or landscapes.
Having Traditional activities including agriculture, craft, cuisine etc.
Having a history of community values or based on past achievements.
