SBI Raises ₹5,000 Crore via AT-1 Bonds at 7.98%

On Wednesday, State Bank of India (SBI) successfully raised ₹5,000 crore through the issuance of Additional Tier-I (AT-I) bonds, marking its first issuance for the current financial year. The bonds, which carry a coupon rate of 7.98%, are aimed at strengthening the bank’s capital base and comply with Basel-III norms.

This issuance comes after SBI’s last AT-I bond issuance in January, where it raised ₹5,000 crore at a higher coupon rate of 8.34%. The market response has been robust, with bids exceeding 3.5 times the base size of ₹2,000 crore, indicating strong investor confidence in the bank.

Coupon Rate and Structure: The bonds are priced at a coupon rate of 7.98%, with a call option available after 10 years.

Investor Response: The issuance attracted significant interest, receiving 108 bids, including participation from provident funds, insurance companies, and mutual funds.

Comparative Rates: The current coupon rate is lower than the previous issuance in January, reflecting a decline in government bond yields by over 30 basis points since April.

Capital Adequacy: As of June 30, 2024, SBI’s capital adequacy ratio stood at 13.86%, down 70 basis points year-on-year, highlighting the need for capital-boosting measures.

Future Plans

SBI has also raised ₹15,000 crore through Tier-II bonds this financial year to support its deposit base amidst credit growth. Meanwhile, Indian Bank is preparing to raise up to ₹5,000 crore through infrastructure bonds, indicating a broader trend of capital-raising efforts in the banking sector.

Launch of Bharat Chana Dal Phase II by Union Minister Pralhad Joshi

Union Food and Consumer Affairs Minister Shri Pralhad Joshi has launched the retail phase of Bharat Chana Dal Phase II in Delhi-NCR, marking a significant step in the government’s commitment to provide essential food items at affordable prices. This initiative includes flagging off mobile vans from NCCF, NAFED, and Kendriya Bhandar to facilitate the distribution of pulses during the festive season.

Retail Pricing and Availability

In this phase, 3 lakh tons of Chana from the price stabilization buffer will be converted into Chana Dal, sold at an MRP of ₹70 per kg, and Chana Whole at ₹58 per kg. The government has also expanded the Bharat brand to include Moong and Masur Dals, priced at ₹107, ₹93, and ₹89 per kg, respectively. This timely resumption of Bharat Chana Dal is expected to bolster supplies for consumers in Delhi-NCR.

Policy Measures for Pulses

The government has implemented various policies to ensure the availability of pulses, including raising the Minimum Support Price (MSP) and allowing duty-free imports of Tur, Urad, Masur, and Chana until March 2025. These actions, along with recent awareness campaigns for farmers, aim to enhance domestic production and stabilize prices, which have shown a declining trend since July 2024.

Vegetable Procurement and Distribution

Additionally, the government procured 4.7 lakh tonnes of onions for price stabilization, with 1.15 lakh tonnes already disposed of across 21 states. Innovative bulk transportation methods via rail rakes have been introduced to facilitate faster distribution. Indents have been placed for shipments to multiple locations in the North-East, ensuring wider availability of onions at reasonable prices.
