Indian Railways Launches Online Personal Luggage Booking from July 31

Indian Railways has rolled out a significant passenger-friendly service of online personal luggage booking for its passengers who have reserved tickets. The facility goes live on July 31, 2026.

The Railway Board has instructed every zone to execute the service. With this online luggage service, passengers can reserve online luggage according to the specified limit while booking their tickets. Here are the complete details of the online luggage service by Indian Railways, including eligibility, luggage limit, charges, and basic rules.

Indian Railways Launches Online Personal Luggage Booking

Passengers having reserved tickets will now be able to book their luggage online in advance from July 31, 2026. The latest initiative is a part of the Indian Railways’ larger conversion to a more tech-driven platform providing users with better services.

As per an order issued by the Railway Board on July 20, 2026, all railway zones have been instructed to implement the new service for personal baggage in the reserved compartments falling under maximum weight category.

This is following the earlier guideline created in March 2025 which has been put in action after proper testing and development.

Why Has Indian Railways Introduced This Facility?

The reason behind Indian Railways introducing this facility is to tackle the troubles passengers come across while reserving extra luggage at the railway station.

Earlier, passengers who have excess luggage had to go to the parcel or luggage booking counters before taking the train. However, with the new online system, passengers can reserve online without doing paperwork and thereby making the traveling experience much better.

Who Can Use the Online Luggage Booking Service?

The online luggage booking facility is available to confirmed passengers in reserved classes.

Passengers with waitlisted or unconfirmed tickets cannot book luggage online.

The luggage booked will have to be carried in the reserved coach and must conform to the limits of weight and size specified by Railways.

New Guidelines for Internet Luggage Reservation

The Railway Board decided that the online reservation system should show all significant details throughout the booking phase.

With this system, travelers will be able to see,

  • Free luggage allowance by class
  • Maximum allowable luggage limit
  • Prohibited items list
  • Penalty for carrying excess luggage
  • Luggage charges applicable

The goal behind this openness is to ensure that the travelers are aware of the regulations beforehand.

Exemption on Luggage in Indian Railways

The luggage allowance for passengers on Indian Railways depends on the type of travel class the passenger has chosen.

The prescribed allowances for each travel class are given below:

Travel Class and Free Allowance

  • AC First Class (1A): 70 kg
  • First Class: 50 kg
  • AC 2 Tier: 50 kg
  • AC 3 Tier (3A): 40 kg
  • AC 3 Economy (3E): 40 kg
  • AC Chair Car (CC): 40 kg
  • Sleeper Class: 40 kg
  • Second Class: 35 kg

Maximum Luggage Capacity Depending on Travel Category

Travellers are offered the service of bringing luggage beyond the admissible limit; yet, they must follow the maximum limit imposed and pay all the required fees.

Category wise admissible maximum luggage capacity

  • AC First Class: 150 kg
  • First Class/AC 2 Tier: 100 kg
  • Sleeper Class: 80 kg
  • Second Class: 70 kg
  • AC 3 Tier/AC Chair Car: 40 kg

A special exception is made for AC 3 Tier, AC 3 Economy, and AC Chair Car categories where the maximum admissible limit is equal to the allowed free weight. As a result, excess baggage can hardly be booked in these travel categories.

Payment for Extra Baggage

Although travelers can carry luggage outside the limit for free baggage, excess baggage can be booked at a charge of 1.5 times the appropriate luggage rate, as long as the maximum limit for the class of travel is adhered to.

This allows travelers to carry additional luggage and, at the same time, not incur any fines while boarding the train.

Regulations Regarding Size of the Luggage

The Indian Railways has also set restrictions on the size of the luggage that can be transported inside a reserved compartment.

Trunks, suitcases, and boxes having dimensions not exceeding 100 cm × 60 cm × 25 cm (Length × Width × Height) can be carried inside the coach.

Any luggage that does not comply with at least one of the measurements is not permitted inside the reserved compartments.

Oversized Luggage Must Be Booked Separately

Those who have oversized suitcases, boxes, and bags will have to book them separately in the Brake Van (Luggage Van).

The Indian Railways has reiterated that commercial items or goods meant for trade cannot be taken as personal luggage in passenger compartments.

Such items must be sent using the railway parcel booking system.

Role of CRIS in the New System

The Railway Board has entrusted the task of developing and testing the online application for digital luggage booking to the Centre for Railway Information Systems (CRIS).

Hamas Agrees to Disarm Under Trump’s Board of Peace Plan: Key Details, Ceasefire Terms and What It Means

US President Donald Trump stated that the Peace Board has come up with an agreement for the full disarmament of Hamas and other militant groups in Gaza. A senior member of the Hamas leadership confirmed that the organization has agreed to the proposal and stated that an official announcement will be made afterwards. Although the news raised optimism regarding the long-term ceasefire, Israel has not yet agreed to the deal, meaning that its realization will depend on further talks and verification.

What Is the Board of Peace Plan?

The Board of Peace is an initiative that has the support of the US and is designed to promote a long-lasting resolution in Gaza after months of negotiations with regional mediators.

As per the Board, the agreement marks the end of a long period of negotiations and the implementation phase has been started. The initiative is part of the second phase of the US-brokered Gaza ceasefire framework involving security arrangements, governance changes, humanitarian recovery, and reconstruction.

It is reported that the initiative has been facilitated by Egypt, Qatar, and Turkey.

What is the Content of the Agreement?

The suggested framework presents some crucial obligations intended to go beyond a mere ceasefire.

Some of its key features includes,

  • Full disarmament of Hamas and other militant groups in Gaza.
  • Pullout of Israeli troops after a successful disarmament.
  • Accounting and safe storage of Hamas’s heavy arms by Palestine authorities.
  • Forming an International Stabilization Force.
  • Establishment of a new Palestinian police force.
  • Restoration and rehabilitation of Gaza under international control.

US officials state that the process will base on verifications, and neither side will take steps towards the next stage unless its obligations are fulfilled.

President Trump’s Declaration

President Donald Trump referred to the deal as a significant step in putting into action his 20-Point Peace Plan concerning Gaza.

According to Trump,

  • Israel will pull out from Gaza with the start of the disarmament process.
  • Gaza will come to be ruled by a new formation of the Palestinian authorities.
  • International peace and security measures will supersede current terrorist infrastructure.

Trump also expressed his gratitude to Egypt, Qatar, and Turkey for their mediatory functions and was sure that Israel would comply with its obligations under the general peace plan.

The Position of Hamas

A high ranking official in Hamas has told reporters that the group agrees with the disarmament plan and that an announcement would be made shortly.

As reported, Hamas has accepted,

  • Total disarmament in line with the proposal.
  • Supervision of storage of heavy arms.
  • Timely implementation process of disarmament based on Israeli actions.

Nevertheless, it will take quite a long time to carry out dismantling of tunnels, weapons storages, and military infrastructure.

Israel Still Has Not Given Actual Approval

Though the details have been disclosed, Israel has not officially accepted the deal.

Several media reports citing Israeli officials revealed that the government expressed its concerns about particular provisions of the deal.

Specifically, it has been claimed that the representatives of the Israeli authorities believe that the terms suggested do not fully satisfy the country’s security requirements.

Thus, the official response of the Israeli government is expected to decide whether the deal has been implemented or not.

How Disarmament Process Will Work?

According to the US officials, the entire mechanism for execution is assumed to be implemented through the “zero trust” verification method.

The suggested plan proceeds as follows,

  • First, smaller armed organizations give up their arms.
  • Second, the weapons of heavy categories are accounted for and secured by Hamas.
  • Third, an international verification institution checks the compliance with all needs.
  • Fourth, the Israeli troops begin withdrawal which will occur through stages.
  • Fifth, the international security organizations take over.
  • Lastly, reconstruction and governing process begin.

Background of Gaza Conflict

The current conflict started on October 7th, 2023, when Hamas attacked Israel, killing about 1200 people and recalling 251 hostages.

Israel started a large military operation in Gaza in response. As per the reports from the Gaza Health Ministry, controlled by Hamas, more than 73000 Palestinians have died in the fighting.

The United Nations has said that the numbers of the ministry are corroborated, although Israel raises concerns about some of the information from Gaza authorities.

The fighting has been characterized by heavy humanitarian devastation and numerous attempts to achieve agreements on ceasefire and hostage release by the international community

Lok Sabha Passes Bill Criminalising Insults to Vande Mataram: Key Provisions, Significance

The Prevention of Insults to National Honour (Amendment) Bill, 2026, has been passed by the Lok Sabha. This Bill brings many laws that would serve as the legal protection for the India’s National Song, Vande Mataram. Its main objective is to make deliberate acts of violation or hindrance of the rendition of Vande Mataram a crime. The Rajya Sabha has already passed this Bill, and it has now been sent to the President for approval.

What is the Prevention of Insults to National Honour (Amendment) Bill, 2026?

Prevention of Insults to National Honour (Amendment) Bill, 2026 is an amendment introduced to the Prevention of Insults to National Honour Act, 1971 for the purpose of giving protection to Vande Mataram, which is India’s National Song.

The 1971 Act currently protects the National Flag, the Constitution of India, and the National Anthem from intentional disrespect. The amendment seeks to extend similar protection to Vande Mataram with a view to prevent any deliberate insult or obstructions during its performance.

This bill was earlier approved by Rajya Sabha. It was passed by the Lok Sabha by means of voice voting.

What Motive Forced the Rule to Come Into Effect?

The government claims that the purpose of the amendment is to create equal recognition and protection under the law for the National Song.

The promoters of the Bill contend that even though Vande Mataram is of immense historical and national importance, it has not received any legal recognition under statute comparable to the National Anthem.

The amendment intends to remedy this legal shortcoming by considering deliberate disrespect to the National Song a criminal offence.

Important Clauses in the Bill

The new changes introduced by this bill includes the,

  • Broadening the legal protection of Vande Mataram through the Act of Prevention of Insults to National Honour Act of 1971.
  • Turning the deliberate insult to the National Song into punishable offence.
  • Declaring the act of obstructing the singing or rendition of Vande Mataram as criminal act.
  • Bringing the legal position of the National Song to the level of that of the National Anthem.
  • Becoming applicable after the approval from the President.

Discussions in Parliament

The bill has been widely discussed in Parliament.

During the meeting in Lok Sabha, the discussion was interrupted by Opposition protests several times before the bill was approved through voice vote.

Previously, Rajya Sabha has approved the bill and it moved to Lok Sabha for formal approval.

The Historical Significance of Vande Mataram

Vande Mataram has an important place in the Indian struggle for freedom.

The song written by Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay in his novel Anandamath has inspired many freedom fighters during the struggle against the British. The song was later recognised as the National Song of India while Jana Gana Mana was declared as the National Anthem.

Though both the songs have a great national importance, one of the songs, the National Anthem, alone was provided statutory protection by law in 1971.

Differences Between National Anthem and National Song

Government of India has established both National Anthem and National Song.

National Anthem (Jana Gana Mana)

  • National Anthem of Nation is endorsed under the Prevention of Insults to National Honour Act, 1971.
  • It is played in all state official functions.

National Song (Vande Mataram)

  • The song stationed as National Song of India.
  • It will be protected legally against insults if the Amendment Act is passed.

Shaheed Udham Singh Martyrdom Day 2026: History, Story of Revenge and Lasting Legacy

On July 31, India commemorates Shaheed Udham Singh Martyrdom Day each year to pay tribute to one of the greatest freedom fighters of the country. Udham Singh is remembered for taking revenge for the Jallianwala Bagh massacre of 1919 by killing Michael O’Dwyer, the then Lieutenant Governor of Punjab, in London in the year 1940. The sacrifice of Udham Singh stands for bravery, justice and perpetual love for the country. Even after so many years of India’s freedom, the life of Udham Singh is still an inspiration for people across generations, thus making his martyrdom day an important day for remembering the life and sacrifices of great people like him.

Who Is Shaheed Udham Singh?

Shaheed Udham Singh was born on 26 December 1899 in Sunam, Punjab, into a Sikh family. After losing his parents when he was young, he was raised by his elder brother at the Central Khalsa Orphanage in the city of Amritsar.

A well-known Freedom fighter, Udham Singh took the name Ram Mohammad Singh Azad in the later years of his life. This name shows unity of all religions in India and the aspiration of the people for freedom.

The Jallianwala Bagh Massacre that Changed His Life

The massacre of Jallianwala Bagh on April 13, 1919 is regarded as a watershed moment in the life of Udham Singh.

On that day, many unarmed Indians had come to Jallianwala Bagh in Amritsar when British soldiers, acting under Brigadier-General Reginald Dyer’s orders, opened gunfire without any warning. Many Indians died and many more got injured.

Although Dyer was responsible for the firing, it was Michael O’Dwyer, who was then the Lieutenant Governor of Punjab, who supported this action and justified the massacre.

This horrifying event had a deep influence on Udham Singh. He decided to make sure that guilty people were punished although it can take him decades.

His Revolutionary Expedition

After the bloodbath, Udham Singh entered into the revolutionary movement.

He got connected with the Ghadar Party, which was working for the Indian independence from British Raj. While he was travelling throughout Africa, Europe and America, he met with revolutionaries and continued to support the independence struggle for India.

In 1927, he was arrested in India for possession of illegal weapons and revolutionary writings. During his time in jail, he met other freedom fighters and got encouraged further in his mission.

After being released, he resumed his work abroad while waiting patiently for the right moment to act.

Michael O’Dwyer’s Assassination

On 13 March 1940, Udham Singh was present at a gathering that took place in Caxton Hall in London wherein Michael O’Dwyer was present.

He entered the hall with a revolver concealed in a hollowed-out book and waited for the assembly to be over before shooting at O’Dwyer who died on the spot.

He did not try to get away and surrendered to the police without any attempt of flight. While on trial, Singh stated that he had committed the act to take revenge for the innocent victims of the Jallianwala Bagh massacre.

His act remains today as one of the most important symbolic acts in India’s revolutionary movement.

Execution and Martyrdom

Udham Singh was convicted of murder after a brief trial.

Despite attempts to ask for his clemency, he was executed on July 31, 1940, in Pentonville Prison located in London.

He became a martyr at the age of 40. In 1974, his body was brought back to India and commemorated.

Udham Singh’s sacrifice is being remembered throughout India.

Udham Singh’s Legacy

  • The Udham Singh Nagar district of Uttarakhand that was named after him.
  • Shaheed Udham Singh Museum located near Jallianwala Bagh in Amritsar.
  • The statue of Udham Singh erected at the Jallianwala Bagh in the year 2018.
  • The public holiday observed in the states of Punjab and Haryana on Shaheed Udham Singh’s martyrdom day.
  • The number of movies, books, documentaries, and songs that recount the life of the son of India many of which include Shaheed Udham Singh and Sardar Udham.

The bravery of Udham Singh inspires that it is possible to resist colonial oppression and remind us of the sacrifices of many people for the independence of India.

MoSPI to Replace Wholesale Price Index with Producer Price Index for GDP Deflation

The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) has announced a major reform in India’s national accounting system by replacing the Wholesale Price Index (WPI) with the Output Producer Price Index (PPI) as the GDP deflator for quarterly and annual Gross Domestic Product (GDP) estimates, wherever applicable.

The move aims to improve the accuracy of real GDP estimation, align India’s statistical practices with international standards, and better reflect changes in production costs and economic activity.

The Producer Price Index (PPI) series was released by the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) in June 2026 and will now play a central role in the revised GDP estimation framework.

What is the Producer Price Index (PPI)?

The Producer Price Index (PPI) measures the average change in prices received by producers for goods and services before they reach consumers.

Unlike the Wholesale Price Index (WPI), which mainly tracks wholesale market prices, the PPI reflects actual prices received by producers and is considered a more accurate indicator for measuring production costs and economic output.

The adoption of PPI aligns India with international statistical best practices followed by many advanced economies.

Why is MoSPI Replacing WPI with PPI?

The replacement of WPI with PPI is intended to:

  • Improve the accuracy of GDP estimates.
  • Better measure real economic growth.
  • Reflect actual producer prices.
  • Align India’s National Accounts with international statistical standards.
  • Reduce distortions in GDP calculations caused by the earlier methodology.

The change is expected to provide policymakers, economists, and investors with more reliable economic data.

Introduction of the Double Deflation Method

A major feature of the revised GDP framework is the adoption of the Double Deflation Method.

What is Double Deflation?

Under this method:

  • Output values are adjusted using Output Producer Price Index (Output PPI).
  • Input costs are adjusted separately using relevant input price indices.

The difference between inflation-adjusted output and inflation-adjusted input provides a more accurate estimate of Real Gross Value Added (GVA).

This approach is widely accepted internationally for national income accounting.

Change in GDP Base Year

As part of the revised GDP series:

  • Old Base Year: 2011–12
  • New Base Year: 2022–23

Updating the base year ensures that GDP calculations better represent:

  • Current production patterns.
  • Structural changes in the economy.
  • Emerging industries.
  • New consumption and investment trends.

What Happens to the Wholesale Price Index?

Although WPI will no longer serve as the principal GDP deflator:

  • It will continue to be published.
  • It may still be used for selected analytical purposes.
  • Consumer Price Index (CPI) will continue to be used for specific granular items wherever appropriate.

Implementation Timeline

MoSPI plans to implement the revised methodology:

  • From: April–June Quarter (Q1) of FY 2026–27.
  • Along with the release of the revised back series GDP data based on the new methodology.

This will ensure continuity and comparability of GDP estimates over time.

Recent Inflation Comparison

According to the revised price indices:

Price Index May 2026 June 2026
Wholesale Price Index (WPI) Inflation 9.68% 9.87%
Output Producer Price Index (PPI) Inflation 9.38% 9.57%

These figures highlight the differences between wholesale prices and producer prices, reinforcing the need for a more representative GDP deflator.

Recent MoSPI Initiative

In another important statistical reform, MoSPI introduced India’s first trial version of the Index of Services Production (ISP) in July 2026.

The ISP aims to:

  • Measure monthly performance of the formal services sector.
  • Improve high-frequency economic indicators.
  • Strengthen India’s statistical framework.

Significance of the Reform

The adoption of PPI as the GDP deflator will:

  • Improve the quality of national income estimates.
  • Enhance international comparability of GDP data.
  • Provide more accurate measurement of real economic growth.
  • Strengthen evidence-based policymaking.
  • Improve macroeconomic analysis and forecasting.

It represents one of the most significant methodological reforms in India’s GDP estimation system in recent years.
