Gyan Bharatam Initiative: India’s National Mission to Digitize Manuscript Heritage

India has launched Gyan Bharatam, an ambitious national programme under the Ministry of Culture to conserve and digitize the country’s priceless manuscript heritage. Announced in the Union Budget 2025, the initiative reflects India’s growing effort to preserve its civilizational knowledge and make it globally accessible for scholars, researchers, and the public.

What is Gyan Bharatam?

Gyan Bharatam is the Government of India’s flagship cultural conservation initiative. Its mission is to survey, document, conserve, digitize and distribute India’s manuscript heritage—a treasure that includes ancient writings on science, philosophy, literature, medicine, astronomy, and much more.

The Government has allocated Rs. 491.66 crore for 2025–2031 to support this mega project.

Core Objectives of Gyan Bharatam

1. Large-scale Manuscript Coverage

The programme aims to cover more than one crore manuscripts preserved across India—in museums, academic institutions, private collections, libraries and community spaces.

2. National Digital Repository

A technology-backed National Digital Repository will be created using AI and advanced digital tools to ensure easy accessibility, conservation, and global reach.

3. Institutional Collaborations

To execute this initiative efficiently, the Ministry of Culture has signed MoUs with 31 institutions, including:

  • 19 Cluster Centres
  • 12 Independent Centres

These centres will work across five key verticals:

Survey & Cataloguing
Conservation & Capacity Building
Technology & Digitization
Linguistics & Translation
Research, Publication & Outreach

Already, 3.5 lakh manuscripts have been digitized, showcasing early success.

Delhi Declaration: A National Commitment

The Delhi Declaration (Gyan Bharatam Sankalp Patra) reinforces India’s collective resolve to protect, digitize, and revitalize manuscript knowledge.

It emphasizes:

  • Manuscripts as the living memory of Indian civilization
  • The need for modern preservation methods
  • Large-scale digital access
  • Renewed research and global collaboration

The declaration transforms manuscript conservation into a people’s movement, connecting scholars, communities, institutions, and private collectors.

Pan-India Scope and Institutional Inclusion

Gyan Bharatam is not confined to any specific region. For example, MoUs have been signed with institutions like Dr. Harisingh Gour University, Madhya Pradesh, showing widespread reach.

Cultural Promotion Alongside Preservation

The government’s reply also highlighted ongoing cultural promotion efforts:

Sangeet Natak Akademi

  • Organizes festivals, workshops and exhibitions
  • Promotes classical, tribal, folk and traditional arts
  • Honors distinguished artists through
  1. Sangeet Natak Akademi Award
  2. Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar

It actively supports Odissi Dance, Odissi Music, and Sambalpuri Dance.

Eastern Zonal Cultural Centre (EZCC), Kolkata

  • Showcases folk arts of Eastern India
  • Regularly promotes Sambalpuri Dance of Odisha through events and festivals
