Gujarat Achieves 1,879 MW Rooftop Solar Capacity, Leading India

Gujarat has once again strengthened its position as India’s leading state in rooftop solar energy. With an installed capacity of 1,879 MW and over 5 lakh rooftop solar systems the state has achieved 50% of its ambitious target of installing 1 million residential systems by March 2027. This progress has been achieved mainly under the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, aimed at providing affordable clean energy to households.

Gujarat’s Rooftop Solar Achievement

Gujarat has installed more than 1.1 million rooftop solar systems over the years across various schemes. Under the PM Surya Ghar scheme alone, the state accounts for over 5 lakh residential installations, keeping it well ahead of other states in residential solar adoption.

Key highlights,

  • Total installed rooftop solar capacity: 1,879 MW
  • Residential systems installed under PM Surya Ghar: Over 5 lakh
  • Target achieved so far: 50% of 1 million systems
  • Target deadline: March 2027

Financial Support and Subsidies

To make rooftop solar affordable the state of the Gujarat has provided strong financial incentives. Residential consumers in the state have already received ₹3,778 crore in subsidies, helping reduce upfront installation costs.

Subsidy Structure for Households

  • ₹30,000 per kW for systems up to 2 kW
  • ₹18,000 per kW for systems between 2–3 kW
  • Maximum subsidy of ₹78,000 for systems above 3 kW

These subsidies have encouraged widespread adoption in both urban and rural areas.

Policy Incentives That Boost Adoption

Gujarat’s success is also driven by user-friendly policies, including,

  • ₹2,950 assistance for regulatory charges for systems up to 6 kW
  • Waiver of network strengthening charges
  • No requirement for net metering agreements
  • No load limit for residential rooftop systems
  • No banking charges on surplus electricity
  • Consumers allowed to sell excess power to the grid

These measures have simplified the process and reduced costs for households.

Rooftop Solar in India

  • Rooftop solar systems allow households to generate electricity using solar panels installed on rooftops.
  • Excess electricity can be fed back into the grid, helping reduce power bills and dependence on fossil fuels.
  • India has been actively promoting rooftop solar as part of its renewable energy and climate goals, with strong financial support from the central and state governments.

Key Takeaways

  • Gujarat leads India in rooftop solar installations
