The Government of India has announced that the country’s inter-regional power transmission capacity will increase by143 gigawatts (GW) by 2027. Which is ensuring stronger electricity flow across different regions in the country. Currently India’s inter regional transmission capacity stands at about 120 GW as of December 2025. The expansion plan is part of a broader strategy to strengthen the National Power Grid and will support the rapidly rising electricity demand in the country.
India’s Inter-Regional Transmission Capacity Expansion Plan
The government plan to increase inter-regional transmission capacity in India. And which aims to improve the efficiency and reliability of electricity distribution across the country.
Union Minister of State for Power Shripad Naik informed Parliament that the national transmission network is being expanded continuously to match the growth in electricity generation and consumption.
The current inter-regional transmission capacity of 120 GW allows power to flow between different regions of India’s national grid.
The government plans to increase this capacity to,
- 143 GW by 2027
- 168 GW by 2032
This expansion will help ensure that electricity generated in one region can be transmitted efficiently to other regions where demand is higher.
Rising Electricity Demand in India by 2032
India’s decision to strengthen inter regional transmission capacity will be drive by the rapid growth in electricity demand.
According to government projections India’s peak electricity demand is expected to reach around 388 GW by 2032.
This significant increase in demand requires a strong and reliable power transmission network capable of handling large volumes of electricity across states and regions.
To meet this requirement of the demand the government is expanding the national power grid and strengthening transmission infrastructure under long-term energy planning initiatives.
Expansion of the National Transmission Network
Under the National Electricity Plan (NEP) – Volume II Transmission India is planning major upgrades to its power transmission network.
By 2032 the country’s transmission infrastructure is expected to expand significantly.
The plan includes increasing the total length of transmission lines and improving the capacity of power transformation systems.
Key targets include,
- Expansion of transmission network to 6.48 lakh circuit kilometres (ckm)
- Increase in transformation capacity to 2,345 Giga Volt Ampere (GVA)
These upgrades will help strengthen the National Grid, improve reliability, and support the integration of renewable energy sources such as solar and wind power.

India operates one of the largest synchronized electricity grids in the world known as the National Power Grid.
It connects different regional grids including the Northern, Western, Eastern, North-Eastern and Southern grids.
