The Indian Space Research Organization started preparing to select the second batch of astronauts for the ambitious Gaganyaan program. Unlike the first batch which was chosen in 2020 this new selection is expected to include the civilian experts from the STEM fields alongside military personnel. This move also signals the India’s long-term vision of building the robust human spaceflight ecosystem and includes the future plans for the space station and a manned Moon mission by 2040.
ISRO Expands Astronaut Selection Beyond Test Pilots
The upcoming astronaut selection will marks the significant shift in the India’s space strategy. The first batch of the astronauts for Gaganyaan Program was just limited to Indian Air Force test pilot which are chosen through the rigorous process which involves the medical, psychological and operational evaluations.
Now the ISRO is broadening the its approach by the considering civilian candidates from the science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) backgrounds.
This will be aligns India with global space agencies which includes the scientists, engineers and specialists in their astronaut corps.
The proposed second batch is expected to include around 10 candidates with the mix of the military pilots and civilian experts.
From Air Force Pilots to Civilian Experts
The inclusion of these civilians marks the transition toward the more diverse and multidisciplinary astronaut team. While the military pilots bring the operational expertise and flight experience and the civilian specialists can contribute in areas like the,
- Space research and the experimentation.
- The engineering and spacecraft systems.
- And medical and biological studies in space.
This combination will strengthen the India’s ability to conduct the advanced scientific missions in orbit.
There is also discussion within the ISRO about to expanding the military category beyond the just test pilots to include helicopter and transportthe stream officers.
Learning from the First Astronaut Batch
India’s first astronaut group will underwent the intensive training under Roscosmos in Russia.
Their preparation included,
- The zero-gravity simulations similar to space.
- The survival training in the extreme conditions.
- Ant the spacecraft systems and operations training.
Astronauts like the Shubhanshu Shukla, Ajit Krishnan and Angad Pratap are now playing the important role to shaping the next phase of astronaut training.
Dedicated Committee for Astronaut Selection
ISRO has also formed the special committee to design the framework for the 2nd batch of astronauts.
This committee includes,
- ISRO officials
- Members of the current astronaut corps
The committee is working onto the,
- Eligibility criteria
- Training modules
- Evaluation systems
- Long-term astronaut management
India’s Long-Term Space Vision
The expansion of this astronaut program is part of the India’s broader ambitions in space exploration.
These includes the,
- Successful execution of the Gaganyaan mission
- The establishment of the Indian space station
- And also sending the Indian astronauts to the Moon by 2040
