As IPL is growing day by day and witnessing the iconic records such as highest runs scored, hitting sixes and boundaries, taking wickets, fastest centuries and etc. And the tournament which is dominated by Batsmen also hold the unique instance. From 2008 to current times, IPL had witnessed the only two centurions in IPL finals. So, Let’s revisit the two iconic centuries which were played on the IPL’s biggest stage.
The First Ever IPL Centurion – Wriddhiman Saha
In the year 2014 IPL Final played between the Kings XI Punjab (Currently Punjab Kings) and Kolkata Knight Riders at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru.
Punjab was batting first against the top bowling unit of Kolkata, Opening batter Wriddhiman Saha had produced one of the iconic inning in IPL Finals and created history.
He scored the incredible 115 runs in just 55 balls and helped his team to reach the total of 199. He smashed the 10 fours and 8 sixes in that innings and became the first player to hit century in IPL Final.
But it the second innings, Manish Pandey’s 96 runs innings had helped Kolkata to win the IPL trophy and Saha’s century went in vain.
Shane Watson Masterclass in 2018
Four years later, IPL Finals witnessed another centurion. In the IPL Final between Sunrisers Hyderabad and Chennai Super Kings at Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai.
Sunrisers had the put the total of 178 on the board, Shane Watson came in with Faf du Plesis in opening. In first 10 balls he did not score a single runs against the swing king Bhuvneshwar Kumar, but after that he delivered the one of the greatest innings in IPL history.
The Australian all rounder remained unbeaten 117 runs from 57 and dismantled the SRH bowling unit and help CSK to win the title that year.
Why IPL Century in Finals Are Rare
The pressure of the final is too heavy, many great and experienced players have played the IPL finals but they could not hit the century apart form Saha and Watson.
Final is not easy for any batsmen, after doing hard work for more than 15 to 16 games and against the two best teams of that year is very tough.
Some of the big players like Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Adam Gilchrist, Suresh Raina and other also part of the final but couldn’t convert their fifties into century.
