National Statistical Commission Gets New Chairperson and Members: Key Details

Government of India appointed a new Chairperson and three Members to the National Statistical Commission (NSC) and with this it strengthened the country’s premier advisory body for the official statistics. This appointment was approved by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) and it brings together the experts from the statistics, academia, public administration and computer science. As government now increasing rely on the data driven decision making and the role of National Statistical Commission to ensure the reliable and transparent statistics has become more important than ever.

Government Appoints New Leadership to the National Statistical Commission

The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved the appointment of the following individuals to the National Statistical Commission on 17th June, 2026.

  1. Prof. Shubhabrata Das
  2. Shri Satyendra Bahadur Singh
  3. Dr. Madhavan Mukund

The appointments bring together the professionals with the decades of experience in statistical research, higher education, governance and data management.

Who Is Dr. Saibal Chattopadhyay?

Dr. Saibal Chattopadhyay has appointed as the Chairperson of the National Statistical Commission (NSC). He previously served as the Director of the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Calcutta

He holds a Ph.D. and Master of Science in the field of Statistics from the University of Connecticut, USA and postgraduate and undergraduate degrees in Statistics from Calcutta University.

His areas of the expertise includes the survey sampling, sequential estimation methods, environmental health studies, clinical research and quantitative marketing research.

Prof. Shubhabrata Das

Prof. Shubhabrata Das is a Professor at the Indian Institute of Management Bangalore. He earned his Ph.D. and MS in the Statistics from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and also completed his M.Stat and B.Stat degrees from the Indian Statistical Institute, Kolkata.

Shri Satyendra Bahadur Singh

He is a retired officer of the Indian Statistical Service (ISS) from the batch of 1987 and Shri Satyendra Bahadur Singh brings over the three decades of technical experience in official statistics and public administration.

Dr. Madhavan Mukund

Dr. Madhavan Mukund currently serves as the Director of the Chennai Mathematical Institute. He also holds a Ph.D. in the Computer Science from Aarhus University, Denmark and a B.Tech in Computer Science and Engineering from the prestigious IIT Bombay.

What Is the National Statistical Commission?

The National Statistical Commission was established in the year 2005 to serve as the apex advisory body for the India’s statistical system.

It acts as the nodal institution responsible for the evolving, monitoring and enforcing the statistical priorities and standards across the country.

The Commission consists of the,

  • A part-time Chairperson
  • Four part-time Members with the expertise in statistics and related fields
  • CEO of NITI Aayog as an ex-officio Member
  • Secretary, Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) as Secretary to the Commission

The NSC was created to improve the quality, transparency and coordination of the official statistics in India.
