Greenland’s parliament has passed a tripartite security agreement between Denmark and the United States to boost security in the Arctic and North Atlantic. The deal aims to increase U.S. military collaboration and presence on the strategically important island. The deal comes after months of tension after U.S. President Donald Trump made several comments expressing his interest in putting Greenland under U.S. control.
Greenland Security Agreement 2026
The deal was passed by Greenland’s lawmakers who voted 16-0 to approve it with seven abstentions.
It was signed in New York on September 2026 by Donald Trump, Denmark’s Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen and Greenland’s Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen at the United Nations General Assembly.
This tripartite deal aims to improve military cooperation between all three nations. It will also boost security in the Arctic and North Atlantic. The agreement will provide a basis for the U.S. military to have a greater presence in Greenland.
Main Points of the Deal
- Increased U.S. military access and defence collaboration.
- Existing military facilities: The U.S. will be able to increase its activities at Pituffik Space Base.
- New Defence Areas: Agreement to build two more U.S. defence areas in Narsarsuaq and Mestersvig with mutually agreed conditions.
- Security in Arctic: Strengthened cooperation between Greenland, Denmark and the U.S. to tackle new security threats in the Arctic and North Atlantic.
- Security in NATO: Increased defence collaboration between all three nations within the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO).
- More defence areas could be looked into.
Sovereignty of Greenland
The deal aims to increase the U.S. military presence but does not give the U.S. sovereignty over Greenland.
Greenland is an autonomous territory of the Kingdom of Denmark. They have significant autonomy over internal matters but Denmark will take charge of foreign affairs, defence and monetary policy.
The agreement recognises Greenland’s right to self determination. This will apply if Greenland decides to become independent in the future.
Why is Greenland strategically important?
Greenland is strategically located between North America and Europe in the Arctic. It is therefore important for military surveillance, missile warning systems and security in the North Atlantic.
With increased military activity and strategic competition between world powers such as the U.S., Russia and China the Arctic is becoming increasingly important.
