Why Are the Commonwealth Games 2026 Limited to 10 Sports?

After the initial host, Victoria (Australia), pulled out of the hosting in 2023 owing to soaring costs of around A$6 to A$7 billion, the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games have seen a reduction in their size.

Glasgow has forced the realization of the Games using an economical structure with already available infrastructure rather than developing new infrastructure. This resulted in,

  • A smaller program in sports with the count of sports reduced from 19 (Birmingham 2022) to just 10.
  • The competition will happen in just four venues.
  • Athletics and swimming remain compulsory sports by regulation of Commonwealth Sports.
  • Other sports were hailed as per their venue placements, athlete participation, cost effectiveness, and commercial viability.

Even with such an abridged sports program, Glasgow 2026 will distribute 215 gold medals and host the largest ever inclusive para sports program with six para sports participating this time around. The Glasgow 2026 organizers are optimistic that this economic model would further help in conducting future Commonwealth Games at lesser costs and increase their appeal as a host for future cities.
